Note: Each of the past three years, the Nike Southwest has placed two teams in the top five at NXN. In each of the past four years, the Southwest has secured at least one at-large bid, with two bids coming in 2015 and 2017. Clearly the region is solidified as one of the best in the country and the depth is there again this year with five teams in the national top 30. American Fork UT saw its streak of eight straight NXN appearances snapped last year. This streak included finishes of eighth place or higher in all of those years with three second-place finishes. This year, American Fork is the favorite to secure one of the two NXN bids Saturday. Also in Utah, surprise 5A champion Corner Canyon, ranked No. 16 in the nation and 5A runner-up No. 29 Skyridge are within striking distance of a podium spot at NXR. In 2017, Desert Vista became the first team from Arizona to qualify for NXN and the Thunder finished in a respectable eighth. They are a longshot to repeat a trip, but this team is greatly improved from the start of the year. The Arizona Division 1 champions finished with only 31 points at the state meet and could challenge in the region with another step forward. Mountain Vista CO won NXR Southwest in 2017, making it two wins in three years for the Golden Eagles. They turned that victory into a third-place NXN finish, the highest in history of the state. With the addition of their low-stick runner, Easton Allred, Mountain Vista has a chance to compete for another title in the region. The projection however, along with American Fork, goes to Colorado 5A champion Dakota Ridge, the preseason regional No. 2, which has peaked at the right time.

DyeStat preseason picks to qualify for NXN: Mountain Vista CO Lone Peak UT
Current Prediction: Mountain Vista CO Niwot CO
Note: Colorado once again seems to be the top state in the Southwest. Mountain Vista CO has been as high as No. 2 in the national rankings and currently stands at No. 8, the best ranking of any team in the region. Niwot CO and Battle Mountain CO are close, ranked No. 2 and No. 3 in the region. Niwot has had an edge throughout the season, but the difference between these two teams has been narrowing, especially at the Colorado state meet. Could Colorado sweep all four NXN eligible spots? It is possible. Classical Academy CO is poised for a possible top-four finish, but if a team is going to prevent a sweep, it will likely be Desert Hills UT. More news |
