Brenner Named 2018-19 ASUN Conference Spring Winner for LifePublished by
ATLANTA, Ga. - The ASUN Conference recognized its 2018-19 Spring Winners for Life team Tuesday. The team is comprised of one student-athlete from each of the nine institutions and honors those who display excellence on and off the playing surface. One of the most decorated runners in the ASUN, Lipscomb's Courtney Brenner was named the 2018-19 ASUN Co-Female Student-Athlete of the Year behind a 4.0 GPA as a Dietetics major and being named Scholar-Athlete of the Year in both Women's Cross Country and Indoor Track & Field. The Indoor Track & Field Most Oustanding Performer as well, Brenner collected three gold medals at the 2019 ASUN Championships. When not running, Brenner spent time volunteering with various organizations such as the Salvation Army, Fifty Forward and her home church's nursery in Brightwood, Calif. Riley Randolph completed her career with FGCU's Softball team with an outstanding 2019 season, earning Second Team All-Conference honors behind an 18-9 record and a 1.10 ERA that ranked fourth in the nation. The pitcher carried a 3.38 overall grade-point average (GPA) as a Communications major. Randolph documented 106 hours of community service in her time at FGCU and another 225 hours at an internship with Soukup Strategic Solutions. The St. Petersburg, Fla., native was a member of Eagles Council as well, serving as the Vice President for the past two years and representing FGCU as part of ASUN SAAC. A senior from Elkridge, Md., Jacksonville's Lillie Miller finished her Dolphins tenure with career-highs in goals, points and shot percentage as she helped the Dolphins to their third-straight ASUN Championship title. A two-time First-Team All-Conference honoree, Miller tallied 46 goals and 57 points in 2019 with 10 goals in the ASUN Championship Tournament. Off the field, Miller was a Business major and Marketing minor who posted a 3.79 GPA while earning All-Academic Team honors. She organized community outreach for the Women's Lacrosse program, reaching out to organizations such as Team Impact, Wilmas's Little People School and the Cancer Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation. The first National Champion in ASUN history, Kennesaw State's Daniel Haugh took home top honors in the hammer throw with a toss of 74.63m, besting all other participants in the event by 0.75m. Haugh rewrote the KSU record book, setting career marks in the discus and hammer throw, winning ASUN Individual Championships in those disciplines as well. Away from the stadium, Haugh held a 3.0 GPA as a graduate student in the Kennesaw State Master of Public Administration program. In his time with the Owls, the Marietta, Ga., native volunteered with the Georgia Meet of Champions and the Peachtree Road Race. Liberty Men's Tennis senior Eddie Gutierrez completed his one year within the ASUN helping the Flames to an ASUN Championship Semifinal berth while racking up personal accomplishments of his own. The Mexico City native won nine singles matches in the spring season, five of which came in ASUN action. Serving as team captain with the Flames, Gutierrez's shining moment came on his Senior Day, notching the third spot on the Sportscenter Top 10 for a tremendous point vs. North Florida. The Business Administration major held a 3.39 GPA and has been accepted into the Liberty University School of Law to further his academic studies. The selection from NJIT for the Spring Winners for Life team is Shannon Turner, a standout in Women's Outdoor Track and Field for the Highlanders. A program record holder in the hammer throw, Turner's accomplishments off the track outweigh those on as the Chemical Engineering major graduated Summa Cum Laude with a perfect 4.0 GPA. Turner was the President of NJIT SAAC in 2018-19 after serving as Vice President the year before. She participated in numerous service engagements with NJIT SAAC and Outdoor Track and Field on her way to being recognized as the NJAIAW Woman of the Year by NJIT. North Alabama's first-ever Spring Winner for Life honoree is Peyton Sockwell from the Lions' Baseball program. The senior middle-infielder finished his four years with UNA having started 190-of-198 games he played in, ranking third in UNA history in each category. Sockwell was honored as the 2019 Bob Stephenson Award winner, voted on by UNA Baseball players and coaches to be given to the player who has contributed to the program on and off the field while showing great character, accountability and loyalty. The Alabama native graduated Cum Laude with a 3.57 GPA as a Professional Finance major. North Florida's Sahil Deshmukh was honored as a unanimous selection to the 2019 ASUN Men's Tennis First-Team All-Conference after guiding the Ospreys to the ASUN Championship Final for the second-straight season. Finishing his career with 73 singles wins which rank second in UNF's Division I history, Deshmukh also partnered with Nilo Duarte to reach as high as 83rd in the ITA Doubles Rankings. A 3.48 GPA Business Management student, the native of India spent his time off the court volunteering in tennis clinics for kids at the Sawgrass Country Club. Stetson's Rachel Noble rounds out the list of honorees, completing her career with the Hatters by helping the program become the first No. 8 seed to beat a one-seed at the NCAA Beach Volleyball Championship. A First-Team All-Conference member in 2019, Noble was crucial in Stetson beating seven top-10 teams during the year and seeing her team finish sixth in the final national rankings. Co-President of Stetson SAAC, Noble served as Social Media Coordinator for ASUN SAAC for a year and a half. The California native graduated with a degree in Sport Business with a 3.82 GPA. The Winners for Life team honors a campus citizen that is respected as one who shares and/or demonstrates the ASUN Core Values: Education, Honesty, Student-Athlete Experience, Fairness, Health, Ambition, Respect, Diversity, Inclusion, Leadership, Responsibility, and Sportsmanship. To be eligible for the award, the student-athlete must have competed in the current academic year in an ASUN sponsored sport and be in good academic standing at his/her university.
