The 2016 Martin County Under the Lights Invitational was canceled Friday night after the Boys JV race due to a deluge of rain that left the course waterlogged.
Dubbed "Under the Lights", once the severe lightning directly overhead knocked out the lights, it became more aptly, "Where are the Lights", as Halpatiokee Regional Park went into darkness.
Meet Management had the safety of the athletes and fans front and center and after a somewhat lengthy delay, although the lights came back on, the decision was made to cancel the remaining four races which were the Varsity and Elite Races.

The cancellation sent some teams home early and others looking for alternative race plans. We know Holy Trinity went to the Deland Invitational, and Circle Christian and Osceola-Kissimmee headed nearby for the Fleet Feet Invitational presented by Saucony on Saturday morning.
With the meet canceled, one of the teams that decided to put in some work was Coach Ken Keys' Westminster Academy 1A boys and girls squads. We had a chance to watch the runners get in some miles and caught up with them after the workout and before they headed back down I-95 to Ft. Lauderdale for some interviews.
We also talked to the winner of the Girls JV race, Pine Crest's Samantha Meade, Lincoln Park Academies Caleb Potorff, and both Coach Cabrera and Deshay Fernandes from Miami Columbus.
