Alabama Sophomore Will Stone from Homewood beat Oak Mountain senior Cole Stidfole in the featured boys race at the TCBY Invitational in Tuscaloosa. Stone ran 16:02.5 to Stidfole’s 16:09.7 in a meeting of two of the top runners in the state. Freshman Lainey Phelps from Homewood won the girls race in 18:32.7, while sophomore Amaris Tyynismaa of Montgomery Catholic was second in 18:44.5.
Alaska Three-time state champion Briahna Gerlach from Glenallen ran a state-leading time of 18:20.6 at the Su Valley Invitational in Talkeetna. It was her fourth consecutive win at this meet. (She ran a PR of 18:02 there last year). Hunter Kratz of Seward won the boys race in 16:01.6 for the fastest time in the state this season. In a pair of others meets, freshman Sadie Tuckwood from Juneau Douglas ran 18:22.1 at the Juneau Invitational and won by a minute and 40 seconds. Gus Schumacher from Service ran 16:02.0 for 5K at the Big 8 Dash in Anchorage.
Arizona Desert Vista’s girls put together a huge performance at the Woodbridge Invitational in California, packing seven runners between 16:40.9 and 17:56 on the fast 3-mile course at Silverlakes Sports Park. DV won the girls sweepstakes team title, dethroning California champion Great Oak. Junior Haley Wolf led the charge with fifth place in 16:40.9. Desert Vista’s boys also ran well, taking fourth as a team in the sweepstakes division. Habtamu Cheney was 11th overall in 14:32.7. In the girls rated race, Rio Rico’s Allie Schadler ran one of the fastest times of the meet, 16:26.3 in a race where she was more than 30 seconds clear of second place. Her sister, Samantha, was third in 17:09.6.
Arkansas At the Missouri Southern Stampede, Fayetteville and Bentonville placed second and sixth, respectively, in the boys team rankings. And in the girls team scoring, the Arkansas powers went 1-2 with Bentonville winning the title with 119 points and Fayetteville coming up second with 177. Sophomore Camren Fischer of Fayetteville placed second overall in 15:20.8 for a new personal best. Tori Willis of Bentonville placed seventh with 18:55.4.
California Luis Grijalva from Armijo picked up a huge win with his narrow victory over Bay Area rival Cooper Teare of St. Joseph Notre Dame. Grijalva, who has 4:07.68 1,600 speed, benefitted from the flat, fast three miles at Silverlakes Sports Park. Grijalva ran 13:58 and Teare was next in 13:59.6. The Great Oak girls scored 65 points for second place, while the boys were third with 151. Further north, Kellen O’Neill from Arcata won the Prefontaine Memorial 5K in Coos Bay, Ore. with 15:54. At the Mt. Carmel/Movin Shoes Invitational at Balboa Park in San Diego, Laura Morgan of Mt. Carmel ran 15:41 on a 2.75-mile course for the fastest girls time of the day. Charlie Sherman of Loyola posted the fastest boys time on a 2.95-mile layout with 15:26. In Hawaii, Freshman Anthony Grover of J Serra Catholic won the three-mile boys race at the Iolani Invitational in 15:21.6. He led his team to second place. Palos Verdes went 1-2-4-5 on the way to 19 points to win the girls team title. Grace Catena ran 17:49.2 for the win.
Colorado Clear eyes, full lungs, can’t lose. Colorado runners loved the sea-level air in Southern California and turned in impressive performances at the Woodbridge Invitational. Brie Oakley of Grandview ran 15:53.6 for the fastest 3-mile time in the nation. The Mountain Vista boys won the boys sweepstakes championship by putting five guys between 14:32.5 and 15:07.3, led by Josh Romine. Palmer Ridge was second, 12 points back of Mountain Vista (99-111), and put four guys under 14:50. At the John Martin Invitational, Lauren Gregory ran 17:27 and won her race by 64 seconds in her hometown of Fort Collins. Fossil Ridge won the girls team title with 74 points. Dylan Ko from Fossil Ridge ran 15:40 for second place in a 5K in Fort Collins.
Connecticut Drew Thompson from Fairfield Prep won the boys varsity race at the 28th Wilton Invitational, running 15:52.3. The junior won by 32 seconds. Pomperaug won the team title with 39 points. Morgan McCormick from Wilton won the 4,000-meter girls race in 15:09.5.
Delaware Salesianum’s boys picked up a big win at the William and Mary Invitational in Virginia, putting four in the top 18 in a deep field. George Steinhoff led the way with 16:35.3 for sixth place overall. At the White Clay Creek Classic, Lydia Olivere of Padua put on a show with a 17:54 that put her almost two minutes ahead of the competition. Wilmington Friends sophomore Connor Nisbet ran 16:30 to win the sophomore race and was the fastest of the day.
District of Columbia Harry Monroe from Gonazaga College placed 15th at the adidas XC Challenge in 15:57.4 and he led the Eagles to 15th place in the team standings. Freshman Megan Lynch of Georgetown Visitation ran 18:39.6 at the Episcopal HS Home Meet in Virginian.
Florida Cole Pruim from Ocoee ran a state-leading time of 15:31.7 at the Darter Invitational in Apopka. Pruim and Noah Quintana of Lake Minneola were more than 40 seconds ahead of the field. Caleb Potorff of Lincoln Park Academy won the 2A/1A varsity boys race at the Spanish River Invitational in 15:43. Alexandra Del Re from Jupiter was the fastest girl, winning her race in 18:11.1.
Georgia Chase Kennedy from East Jackson was a big winner at the Warpath Invitational in Canton, running 15:28.8 and taking the tape by 25 seconds. Marist, however, dominated the team competition with 31 points. Lambert was second with 95. Kaylee DuPont of South Forsyth edged out Liz Galarza from West Forsyth in very good girls race, 17:55.1 to 17:57.9. It was the second time this season that DuPont beat Galarza by less than three seconds. South Forsyth also won the team battle with 37 points.
Hawaii Connor Lehl from Punahou ran 15:26.5 for three miles on the way to second place at the Iolani Invitational. Iolani was the top island team, taking fourth. On the girls side, Jordan Jones of PAC 5 placed sixth in 18:26.4. Punahou took fourth place in the girls team standings. RECAP by Ian Tsang Cody Ranfrantz and Lawrence Barrett from Konawaena went 1-2 at the BIIF Cross Country Meet in Kealakehe. Saya Yabe from Waiakea led her team to the win with first place individually.
Idaho At the Mile High Classic in Challis, twins Ryan and Nick Barna from Skyline went 1-2 and were part of a 17-point domination. Ryan Barna ran 16:00.6 for the win. Michelle Pratt from Blackfoot won the girls race in 18:30.9. Ben Shaw from Riverside ran 16:01.8 at the Coeur d’Alene Invitational for the fastest time of the day there.
Illinois Course conditions at Detweiler Park were slightly improved over the week prior for the Richard Spring Invitational. Brian Griffith from Lake Zurich covered the still-muddy 3-mile course at Detweiler Park in 14:34.5 and Neuqua Valley had a strong pack up front for 65 points and the team victory. Freshman Katelynne Hart led teammate Lindsey Payne across the finish line to lead Glenbard West to a team title with 73 points. Hart ran 17:06.2 and Payne was right with her in 17:08.9. They were 35 seconds ahead of the rest of the field.
Indiana Sarah Leinheiser of Carmel placed third but led her team to the championship in the seeded section of the Trinity Valkyrie Invitational in Louisville, Ky. Leinheiser ran 17:37.3, which is 10 seconds faster than she ran the course last year. The Greyhounds put all five scorers in the top 14 on the way to 36 points. The Carmel boys scored 105 points and were nine points out of first place. Colin Murphy led the team with his 11th place finish in 15:59.4. At the New Prairie Invitational, Zeb Hernandez of Warsaw Community (15:51.2) and Jordyn Boyer of Lowell (18:27.9) were the individual winners. Penn scored 91 points to take the girls title, Westview edged Lowell 117-119 to take the boys crown.
Iowa The girls from Johnston put together a big performance at the Heartland Classic at Ames, scoring 38 points and putting five scorers in the top 14. That includes contributions from freshmen Brooke McKee and Paige Horner. Jessica McKee was second overall for Johnston, in 17:56.4. Patrick Bose of Johnston won the boys individual race in 14:54.7. Nicholas Yanek of Pleasant Valley was fourth in 15:11.2. Dowling Catholic was fourth in the boys team standings with 165 points.
Kansas Molly Born of Shawnee Mission North had a sensational run at the Heartland Classic, pulling away for a 17:09.4 victory. Born, a junior, ran 18:35 in the same meet last year. In the boys race, St. Thomas Aquinas won a big invitational for the second week in a row. Will Cole and Alex Gill both finished in the top 10 and STA held on for a 107-108 victory over Edina MN. The state’s other big star, Cailie Logue of Girard, torched the course at the Missouri Southern Stampede with 17:18.2 for a 36-second victory.
Kentucky The St. Xavier boys of Louisville scored 96 points to win the team title at the Trinity Valkyrie Invitational. Patrick Schaefer led the team with his eighth place finish in 15:51.6. Alex Mortimer from Tates Creek was second overall in 15:35.4 for a new personal best for 5,000 meters. Michaela Reinhart from Lexington Catholic was second overall in the girls race, finishing in 17:25.4.
Louisiana Thomas Daigle of Ascension Catholic won the varsity boys race at the LSU Invitational in 17:14.5, edging out Tyler Granger of Lafayette Christian. St. Thomas More scored 62 points to win the boys team title. Kirsten Landry of Ascension Episopal won the girls varsity race in 18:58.2. Vanderbilt Catholic scored 49 points to win the girls team title.
Maine Sophomore Wyatt Lord of Hampden Academy ran a time of 16:29.6 in a six-team KVAC meet on his home course. That time leads the state for 5,000 meters.
Maryland At the Barnhart Invitational in Dulaney, McDonogh junior Dalton Hengst ran 15:44.4 to take the victory. Dulaney put its five scorers across in the top 23 and won the team title with 77 points. Hayley Jackson from Patuxent won the girls race in 18:04 and had a margin of 25 seconds at the end. Second-place finisher Kelly Wesolowski led Hereford to the team title with 83 points. Rohann Asfaw of Richard Montgomery won the boys varsity race at the Oatlands Invitational in Virginia in 15:47.
Massachusetts The Lowell boys dominated the Amherst Invitational, putting five in the top eight and scoring 26 points. Chris Polanco and Anthony Rodriguez led the way with their 2-3 finishes in 16:03.1 and 16:03.3. Sophomore Sophia Jacobs-Townsley of Amherst Pelham won the girls race in 18:24.4. She improved by one spot and 23 seconds over 2015. Hopkinton scored 54 points to take the team win.
Michigan Noah Jacobs from Corunna won the MSU Spartan Invitational on Friday in 15:13. He beat Alpena’s Mitchell Day by 15 seconds. Cole Johnson from Rockford was third (15:33). In the elite girls race, Maggie Farrell of Battle Creek Lakeview ran a PR 17:33 and beat Traverse City Central standout Sielle Kearney by two seconds. Adelyn Ackley of Hart was third in 17:36. Northville won the team title with 204 points.
Minnesota Edina’s Patrick Roos finished second in a fast time of 15:00.9 at the Heartland Classic in Ames, Iowa. The Hornets finished one point out of first place with 118 points. Jaycie Thomsen of Wayzata was eight overall and led her team to second place with 81 points. The big meet this weekend is the Roy Griak Invitational, which will bring most of the state’s major players into action.
Mississippi Starkville’s Kate Mattox ran 18:07 to win the Saltillo Invitational by a margin of two minutes and 25 seconds. Her younger sister Caroline was second. Lake Spradling of Starkville was the top boy in the meet, running 16:04.8.
Missouri Webb City’s boys scored 117 points to win the Missouri Southern Stampede. Ryan Riddle led the way in seventh place (15:45.9). Jacob McCrackin, a junior from West Plains, was the overall winner in 15:16.4. Claire Workman ran 17:55 for second place in the girls race and led The Summit Preparatory to a 2-5-6 finish up front.
Montana Senior Chase Equall of Bozeman ran 16:00.9 for an impressive win over three miles at the Great Falls Invitational. The Hawks scored 19 points to defeat Flathead and Billings West. The Bozeman girls were even more dominant, scoring a perfect 15 points, and were led up front by Piper Meuwissen’s 18:17.4.
Nebraska The Fremont boys placed third at the Heartland Classic in Ames, Iowa. Sophomore Jose Gonzalez paced the team with his sixth place finish in 15:19.4. Millard West also ran in the meet but top runner Seth Hirsch sat out. Gabby McGinn of Millard West placed third overall in the girls race, running a state-leading 5K time of 18:04.3.
Nevada Henry Weisberg of McQueen ran 15:49 for a state-leading time (5K) at the High Desert League Meet in Sparks. Spanish Springs put three in the top five to win the boys tea title with 33 points. Samantha King-Shaw of Reed ran 19:05 and won the girls race by 21 seconds. McQueen edged Reno 37-41 in the team race.
New Hampshire Jonathan Allard from Keene won the Amherst Invitational in Massachusetts, running 15:59.2. He improved from fourth place in 2015.
New Jersey Earlier in the week, Christian Brothers Academy was pressed by Colts Neck in a rare close dual meet. CBA hasn’t lost a dual meet since 1973 and the streak was extended to 343 wins with a 37-41 result that was the team’s closest since 1981. At the Battle at Ocean County, Elliott Gindi of Ocean Township ran 15:10 for a 20-second win in the senior race. Cherry Hill East scored 25 points in that race. Niamh Hayes of Howell was the fastest girl in the meet, clocking 17:56. She won by 35 seconds. Rumson-Fair Haven scored 44 points to win the senior race.
New Mexico In the Four Corners area, at the Shiprock Invitational, Kashon Harrison of Kirtland Central and Santiago Hardy of Chinle – club teammates for Wings of America – went 1-2. Harrison ran 15:26.6. Chinle edged Kirtland Central for the team win, 56-58. Chamique DuBoise of Window Rock ran 19:30.9 to win the girls race. Window Rock edged out Shiprock, 48-51, for the team win.
New York The Saratoga Springs boys used superior depth to win the Queensbury Invitational with 67 points. Ethan Carey of Queensbury was second overall in the meet with 15:56.5. Sophomore Kathryn Tenney of Colonie Central was second in the girls varsity race in 18:50.8. Olivia Elston of Goshen ran 17:51.7 at the Suffern Invitational and won by 21 seconds. Caroline Timm from Our Lady of Lourdes ran 18:18.8 at the Dan Purdy Invitational and won by almost two minutes.
North Carolina Connor Lane of Cardinal Gibbons won the boys championship race at the adidas XC Challenge by running 15:03.1. He won the race for the second year in a row. Needham Broughton scored a decisive victory on the boys side with 84 points. The five scorers split 16 seconds, led by Lanier Derbyshire’s 15:50 for 11th place. Cardinal Gibbons took second place on the girls side with 136 points, behind Blacksburg VA. Chapel Hill was third with 152. Sarah Bodmer of Cary Academy placed third in 18:23.6. Sara Platek of Ragsdale ran 18:01.6 at the Hounds and Hare Invitational. Noah Dalhare of Providence Day won the boys race in 15:59.4.
North Dakota Jalen Chase led small-class state champion New Town to an 18-point score and team victory at the Watford City Invitational. He ran 16:11.6 and won by nearly a minute.
Ohio India Johnson from Hilliard Davidson won the seeded girls race at the Trinity Valkyrie Invitational in 17:23.8, nosing out Michaela Reinhart (17:25.4). Meanwhile, Arjun Jha of Thomas Worthington won the boys race in 15:21.9. The Louisville OH boys also picked up a victory by taking the MSU Spartan Invitational in Michigan. The team won the meet with 158 points on the strength of putting four guys in the top 25.
Oklahoma The Owasso girls placed seventh at the Missouri Southern Stampede, led by Maya Boschee, who ran 19:11 for ninth place. Jonathan Horton of Metro Christian ran a PR 16:19.2 on the way to 21st. The Lincoln Christian boys and girls swept the Bishop Kelley Invitational in Tulsa.
Oregon Wilson junior Alex Slenning turned in one of the best performances of the season in Oregon when he ran 15:26.6 at the Northwest Classic at Lane Community College. He was 16 seconds up on McMinnville sophomore Zane Fodge at the finish. South Eugene’s boys won the team competition with 84 points while Crater was second with 100. Ginger Murnieks of Sprague won the girls race in 18:07.4. She won for the second year in a row and lowered her time by 25 seconds. Summit won the girls title with 70 points and Sheldon scored 80. Sunset sophomore Ember Stratton ran 17:55 in a Metro League meet against Glencoe and Beaverton.
Pennsylvania Nathan Henderson from J.P. McCaskey won the Ben Bloser Bulldog Cross Country Invitational with 15:30 at Newville. Lower Dauphin went 3-4-5 on the way to the team title. Junior Abby Yourkavitch from Chambersburg Area won a close one with Emily Schuler from Dallastown Area in the girls race, 18:32.5 to 18:33.3.
South Carolina Jackson Ellenburg of Summerville was fifth at the Hare and Hounds Invitational in North Carolina. He ran 16:10.7 at McAlpine Greenway Park.
South Dakota Seth Iverson of Roosevelt placed 10th at the Heartland Classic in Ames, Iowa, running 15:29.3. Teammate Thane Hein wasn’t far back, at 15:46.3.
Tennessee Annika Sleenhof from Ravenwood placed fourth at the Trinity Valkyrie Invitational, running a new personal record 17:40.4. That time is nearly two minutes faster than when she ran at the same meet in 2015. Will Peters of Montgomery Bell was 19th in the boys race, in 16:07.4.
Texas Sophomore Alex Maier of Flower Mound turned in another strong performance at the Flower Mound Invitational, where he ran 15:08.9 for a new personal record. Carrie Fish from Frisco Liberty ran 18:07.2 to win the girls race. At the Woodbridge Cross Country Classic in California, Reed Brown of Southlake Carroll ran 14:11.7 on the three-mile course and led his team to sixth place in a deep, talented field. The SLC boys scored 247 points. Catherine Tracht and Gillian Mortimer placed 10th and 11th for Southlake Carroll in the girls sweepstakes race and led the team to third place behind Desert Vista AZ and Great Oak CA.
Utah The Desert Hills boys enjoyed a strong performance at the Woodbridge Cross Country Classic in California. Jaiden Melendrez placed fourth overall on the three-mile course in 14:13 and led the team to seventh in the boys sweepstakes standings. Desert Hills was 13th in the girls team standings. Whitney Rich of Bingham ran 17:30 for a three-mile PR at the Viking Invitational in Pleasant Grove. At the UIAAA Invitational, Alison Pray from Salem Hills ran 17:58.6 for a 17-second win. Sophomore Grant Gardner from Springville won with 15:09.4.
Vermont Tyler Marshall and Sophia Gorman of Champlain Valley Union each won varsity races at the Queensbury Invitational in New York. Marshall won with a time of 15:55.2. CVU finished fifth in the boys team standings. Gorman ran 18:50.2 to lead the CVU girls, who put five in the top 18, to the team title with 57 points.
Virginia Rachel McArthur of Patriot won the girls championship race at the adidas XC Challenge in North Carolina, running 18:07.8. The Blacksburg girls won the team title by putting four in the top 17 and finishing with 71 points. Blacksburg was also third in the boys team standings. Waleed Suliman from Douglas Freeman ran 15:31.3 to win the William and Mary Invitational in Williamsburg. In a very close team competition, Freeman was second to Salesianum DE (135-146). Jodi Tolarchyk from Hickory won the girls race in 18:31.8 as Grafton took the team honors. At the Oatlands Invitational, the Loudoun Valley boys packed up nicely for 85 points and were 140 points in the clear for the title. Peter Morris led the way with second place in 15:50. Heather Holt led George C. Marshall to the team title with her individual triumph in 17:52.
Washington Lincoln of Tacoma’s James Mwaura won the Fort Steilacoom Invitational with 15:07.7. The result was 30 seconds faster than his race in the same meet in 2015. Tahoma won the boys gold division title with 54 points. Liberty of Issaquah won the girls gold division crown with 57 points. Erica Simison from Eisenhower was the fastest girl of the day with 18:13.8. Taylor Roe from Lake Stevens ran 18:38 for the victory Division 1 varsity race at the South Whidbey Carl Westling Invitational. Edmonds-Woodway dominated the team competition with 28 points. Matthew Watkins led Henry Jackson to the boys team title by running 15:58.9 for a 25-second win.
West Virginia Hannah Lipps from Hampshire went to North Carolina for the adidas XC Challenge and won the invitational section in 19:01.8. She won by 47 seconds.
Wisconsin Dana Feyen of Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau had a busy week, winning the Altoona Invitational on Sept. 15 in 18:19.3 and then two days later winning at the Smiley Invitational in 18:39.4. Sun Prairie swept the boys and girls team titles (Div 1) at the Smiley Invitational.
Wyoming The Kelly Walsh boys got a big result at the John Martin Invitational in Fort Collins, Colo. The Trojans scored 79 points and put four in the top 16. Garrett Condelario from Natrona County was the individual champion, 15:35 for 5,000 meters. Aubrey Frentheway of Cheyenne Central was third in the girls race with 18:34. Laramie’s girls placed a close second to Fossil Ridge (74-76). |
