Ka'Deem Wynn - In the spring of 2016, spectators, coaches, and athletes flocked to Bradenton to witness Florida’s annual outdoor track and field state championships, which was held at IMG Academy after moving from the previous location, the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, which hosted the championships since 2012. New locations also meant the possibility of new performances not yet witnessed, and that’s what happened when Riverview’s Bailey ‘Hurricane’ Hertenstein was clipped by Lake Brantley’s Sinclaire Johnson with one lap to go of the girls 4A 1600 race.

With the pack already running close together, Hertenstein was sitting on the inside of the track and made a move to get on the outside. When she made her move, however, she came into contact with Johnson, causing both girls to stumble and Hertenstein going to the ground.

Review’s Bailey Hertenstein (Bib No. 2046) making a move shortly after falling on the track.

In an incredible display of resilience, determination, and triumph, Hertenstein recovered quickly from the fall, throwing in a surge to get back into the race. Over the next 200 meters, she went from sixth place to first and kept going, even holding off challenger Kayley Delay, ultimately winning the girls 4A state title, finishing in 5:05.

After the race, she said that in those few short moments, she told herself, “I’m not going to give up that easily. I tripped, but I need to get back up. You have to learn to get back up and continue what you started.”

Wise words, Bailey. Wise words indeed.
