Friday:

The opening day of New Balance Nationals Indoor 2017 saw two new high school records. Brie Oakley of Grandview CO broke the national record in the girls 5,000 meters, running 15:55.75 to win by over 50 seconds. This was the seventh straight year the girls 5,000-meter record has been broken at NBNI. Later in the session, the Carlisle PA boys, led by Sam and Noah Affolder, smashed the boys indoor distance medley relay record, running 9:56.18 to become the second team to break the 10-minute barrier.

The second day of NBNI action started off with two early high school records and a class record. Lauren Harris, the senior from Sachem East NY, broke her own national record in the one-mile race walk with a time of 6:53.44. Finishing in second, Taylor Ewert of Beavercreek OH broke the freshman class record in 7:06.32.

Trey Cunningham, the senior from Winfield AL, improved on his high school record in the 60-meter hurdles, running the prelims in 7.45. That is also a world U20 record. Cunningham will race in the semi-finals on Sunday.

As the meet moved out of the early morning hours, there were three more high school records set. Continuing with the hurdles theme, both the boys and girls records fell in the 4x55-meter shuttle hurdles. The East Orange NJ boys set a new mark of 28.62 and the Western Branch VA girls ran 30.63.

Armand Duplantis, the Lafeyette LA junior, set the final record of the day. He became the first high school athlete to clear 19-1 (5.82m) in the pole vault, breaking his own record from earlier in the season. That is also a world U20 record as well.
