Elija Godwin Commits to Run Track at Georgia

According to Gabriel Stovall of the Covington News, Newton County GA senior Elija Godwin has signed with Georgia for track and field.

Godwin has won four Georgia state titles in the 200 meters, 400 meters and the triple jump. He owns bests of 10.62 in the 100, 20.71 in the 200, 46.23 in the 400 and 47-9 in the triple jump. He won the 2016 Brooks PR Invitational 400 as a sophomore in 46.92.

The two-sport athlete received seven football scholarship offers, but he turned them down to focus on track. Godwin has not entirely shut the door on football, but he knows it would be difficult to join the Georgia football program in the future.

Godwin cited the individualized training he will receive at Georgia and the goal of the Georgia coaches to aggressively recruit in-state athletes, keeping them at home, as reasons he chose Georgia over other top college programs.
