Karissa Schweizer of Missouri edged out Ednah Kurgat of New Mexico in a 5,000-meter dual on the indoor track Saturday at Boston University.

RESULTS

The race between the two most recent NCAA cross country champions produced elite early December times.

Schweizer, the 2016 NCAA champion, ran 15:17.31 and beat Kurgat, who ran 15:19.03 in the Boston University Indoor Season Opener. Those are the sixth- and seventh-fastest times in collegiate history.

It was a strong bounce-back performance by Schweizer who faded in the last half of the NCAA cross country final Nov. 18 in Louisville, Ky. The indoor 5K also featured Weini Kelati of New Mexico (15:37.03), Sharon Lokedi of Kansas (15:39.05) and Grayson Murphy of Utah (15:44.45).

New Hampshire senior Elinor Purrier won the 3,000 in 8:55.68 to elevate to the No. 10 performer in NCAA indoor history.

Harvard junior Gabby Thomas became the No. 11 collegiate indoor 300 performer in history by clocking 37.47.
