Scotland's Callum Hawkins Released from Hospital After Collapsing in the Commonwealth Games Marathon

By Adam Kopet

Callum Hawkins of Scotland was leading the marathon at the Commonwealth Games with about two miles to go when the heat of Gold Coast, Australia, finally caught up with him. He collapsed twice in the closing stages of the race and did not finish.

Australia's Mike Shelley went on to win the race, defending his title from 2014, while Hawkins was tended to by medical staff. He was eventually admitted to a local hospital.

Michael Pavitt of Inside the Games reports Hawkins has been discharged from the hospital and rejoined his Scotland teammates in the athletes' village before the team returns home.

Hawkins set a personal best in the marathon last year at the IAAF World Outdoor Championships in London, running 2:10:17 for fourth place.
