Davis UT Team Mourning Loss Of Thomas Hogan

By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor

The track team and Davis High in Kaysville, Utah is mourning the loss of an athlete this week.

Thomas Hogan, a member of the Davis cross country and track and field teams, died on Friday, Feb. 15 while attending the Simplot Games in Pocatello, Idaho with his teammates. He did not compete at the meet.

Hogan, 17, had experienced recent medical challenges.

A funeral will be held Saturday.

Our sincerest condolences go out to the Davis community and Hogan family.

OBITUARY

A GoFundMe Account has been set up to help the Hogan family with expenses.

Note: The following statement was crafted by coach Markham Hyde and the Hogan family and released to DyeStat on behalf of the Davis track team.

Thomas was a coaches' dream. Not because he was the fastest kid on the team, but because of what he gave for the team. Thomas always had a smile on his face and the driest of jokes ready to put a smile on your face. Thomas reached out to the new kids on the team and made sure they felt welcome and were cared for. And Thomas didn't do this because he was told to, he did it because he genuinely cared about his teammates and wanted to get to know them. When you have over 200 kids on your team it takes a while to get to know everyone. It didn't take long to get to know Thomas.  When we hosted meets, Thomas always did his job and probably 3 or 4 other kids' jobs as well, whatever it took. Thomas was the ultimate teammate. He trained hard, he raced hard and when he wasn't racing he cheered hard. It was an honor to have coached Thomas.

There has been a lot of success here at Davis High. The boys and girls track team have won 19 state championships since the year 2000. Some might look at that success and assume that we have done that with just the work of a few elite athletes but it takes an entire team to be successful. Athletes like Thomas that are not the most successful on the track but give everything to the team are why Davis has been so great. If we can do anything as a team this year to honor Thomas it would be to try and care for the team the way he did.

One of the incredible things that has come out of this tragedy is the support our team has felt. We have an incredible community here in Kaysville that is doing everything they can to take care of these kids. I feel blessed to be part of such an incredible track community here in Utah as well. I've received countless emails, texts, phone calls, and personal visits from coaches and athletes from other schools. Everyone just wants to help and show their support. A tragedy like this really puts things in perspective and it has brought out the best in people. It means a lot to me and the team to know that others, in some cases rivals, are thinking of us.
