Chaunte Lowe Reveals She's Battling Breast CancerPublished by
Chaunte Lowe Believes Her Breast Cancer Was Caught At "Curable Stage," Warns Others To Be Proactive By Todd Grasley for DyeStat High jumper Chaunte Lowe, a four-time Olympian and 2012 bronze medalist, has been diagnosed with breast cancer. "I found out about three weeks ago," Lowe said. "I knew something was wrong way earlier than the doctors, and had I not been so proactive I'm not sure the outcome would have been the same." Lowe, who has two daughters, said she felt compelled to tell her story. At just 35 years old, Lowe said she felt "too young" to be diagnosed with the disease. Sadly, it's not the case. "It can happen at any age and to anyone," Lowe said. "I know that hearing my story can save someone's life. Checking yourself, and insisting that your doctors check you, can save your life." Lowe said she is still coming to grips with the diagnosis and is preparing to fight for her health.
"So far, to me, it seems like fighting for my mind and directing my thoughts in a positive light will be essential in my healing," Lowe said. "As I go through this journey, I know that my well being depends on keeping my joy. I don't want anyone to feel sorry for me because I was blessed I was able to find the cancer early and at a very curable stage."
For those inside and outside of the track and field community who have already offered their well wishes, Lowe is appreciative. "I have been overwhelmed with the love and support I have received from those that have followed me through the years," she added. "I want everyone to know that I am okay and I am well prepared for the fight ahead."
