The indoor facility at the Boston University Track and Tennis Center has developed a reputation for producing some of the fastest distance races ever showcased in the United States and Friday was no exception at the John Thomas Terrier Classic.

Kenyan professional Paul Tanui and Northern Arizona’s Tyler Day added another impressive chapter to the venue’s growing history with their performances in the invitational men’s 5,000 meters, contributing to the top three times in the world during this indoor season.

Tanui clocked 13 minutes, 15.72 seconds and Day ran an American indoor collegiate record 13:16.95, with American Eric Jenkins placing third in 13:22.32. Jenkins already ranks as the second-fastest indoor performer in American history with his 13:05.85 from the Boston University Last Chance meet in 2017.

Tanui, the 2016 Olympic silver medalist and three-time World Championships bronze medalist in the 10,000 meters, improved to the No. 14 indoor 5,000 performer in Kenyan history, with Day eclipsing the 2009 American indoor collegiate mark of 13:18.12 set by Galen Rupp at the Tyson Invitational in Arkansas. Day also elevated to the third-fastest all-time collegiate indoor performer and No. 11 in American history.

Only a pair of Kenyans, Arizona teammates Lawi Lalang and Stephen Sambu, produced faster collegiate indoor 5,000 times than Day. Lalang clocked 13:08.28 and Sambu ran 13:13.74 at the 2012 NYRR Millrose Games.

Day entered the meet with an outdoor 5,000 personal best of 13:25.06 and top indoor mark of 13:49.53 from his eighth-place finish at the 2017 Iowa State Classic. He eclipsed the previous Lumberjacks indoor record of 13:29.01 set in 2011 by Diego Estrada when he placed fourth at the Division 1 indoor final.

Former Lumberjacks standout Matthew Baxter, now training with HOKA ONE ONE Northern Arizona Elite, finished fourth in 13:27.61. Northern Arizona’s Luis Grijalva placed fifth in 13:29.74, elevating to the No. 16 all-time indoor collegiate performer.

Iowa State’s Edwin Kurgat, who clocked 13:24.04 on Dec. 7 at the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener at Boston University, now ranks as the No. 11 indoor performer in collegiate history and No. 20 all-time among Kenyans. He also sits at fourth in the world during this indoor season.

American professional Raevyn Rogers, the World silver medalist in the outdoor 800 meters, won the women’s 1,000 in 2:39.0.

Mexico’s Laura Galvan, the Pan American gold medalist in the 5,000 meters, prevailed in the women’s mile in 4:31.89 and Canada’s Julie-Anne Staehli won the women’s 3,000 meters in 8:47.97.

Texas triumphed in the women’s 4x800 relay in 8:46.16, with Wagner taking the men’s distance medley relay in 9:49.54.
