Katelyn Tuohy Named Girls Cross Country Runner Of The Year For Third Time

Decorated distance star Katelyn Tuohy has set national records and stood on top of many podiums, but the seasoned champion remained as humble as ever after receiving her record fifth Gatorade national award Thursday, including her third consecutive selection as Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year.

“I was surprised and really excited,” the North Rockland NY senior said in a phone interview following the awards ceremony.

“It means a lot just because I’ve been working hard my whole high school career, and it reflects the hard work I’ve been putting into my running and academics.”

Tuohy, 17, is the only athlete, male or female, to win five Gatorade national awards since the program began in 1985. She has received awards in both cross country and track, and in 2018, she was named the Gatorade National Female Athlete of the Year.

Her third national cross country award helped Tuohy equal the success of Marion Jones, who was selected National Girls Track and Field Athlete of the Year from 1990-92, as the only two individuals in Gatorade’s history to win three in a row in a single sport.

One of the most accomplished high school distance runners in history, Tuohy has amassed an incredible collection of titles, event records and accolades.

In 2018, she recorded the fastest cross country 5,000-meter time ever for a high school girl when she ran an eye-popping 16:06.87 at the Ocean State Invitational in Rhode Island.

She’s also the only runner, boy or girl, to capture three Nike Cross Nationals titles, winning her first when she was a sophomore and snagging her third victory Dec. 7 after a thrilling sprint to the finish with runner-up Taylor Ewert of Beavercreek, Ohio.

Tuohy is also a mighty force on the track, where she holds national indoor records in the 3,000 and 5,000 meters. In 2018, she crushed Polly Plummer’s outdoor girls’ mile record — a mark that stood for 36 years — when she ran a blistering 4:33.8 to win New Balance Outdoor Nationals.

But on Thursday, Tuohy, who has signed to run for North Carolina State later this year, was more inclined to talk about her team’s goals rather than her own.

At the prestigious 113th NYRR Millrose Games on Saturday, Tuohy will skip the elite girls mile — where she finished fourth in 2018 and missed last year due to an illness — but plans to run on her team’s 4x800 relay.

“We are trying to qualify for the state meet, and it will be a nice meet to practice running up against good competition,” she said.
