It was a familiar face in a new place Saturday, with Doug Soles making his cross country coaching debut with Herriman High at the season-opening Premier Invitational at the Cottonwood Complex in Salt Lake City, Utah.

After the Mustangs took the top two spots and placed five athletes in the top 10 of the 2.9-mile boys varsity race, the remarkable results to start the national prep cross country schedule resembled the past impressive performances Soles was connected with during his successful tenure at Great Oak High in California.

RESULTS

William Horne prevailed in 15 minutes, 4.6 seconds and fellow senior Noah Jenkins clocked 15:13.1 for 6A program Herriman, which produced a 27-161 victory against 5A school Timpanogos combining athletes from all classifications.

The Mustangs, who also had seniors Ryland Garner (15:42.2) and Luke Briggs (15:47.6) finish sixth and eighth overall along with junior William Steadman placing 10th at 15:49.1, triumphed by an 18-64 margin against 6A rival Farmington, which was third overall combining all classifications with 177 points.

Sophomore Tayshaun Ogomo was 16th overall for Herriman, clocking 16:15.0.

“Herriman cross country today got to finally see what I have been telling them since I took over at the end of February,” said Soles, who left Great Oak following the California spring 2021 season and moved with his family to Utah.

“These boys will be good.”

Senior Alex Maxfield of 6A program West Jordan broke up Herriman’s pack, taking third overall in 15:23.9.

Andrew Jensen, a senior at Bountiful, was the top 5A athlete with a fourth-place finish in 15:29.1 and fellow 5A competitors Brady Christensen, a junior at Woods Cross, and Stansbury senior Paul Scown were fifth and seventh overall in 15:42.5 and 15:45.3, respectively.

Junior Clark Peters took ninth overall in 15:48.9 for Timpanogos, which prevailed by a 92-106 margin against 5A rival Bountiful, followed by Woods Cross at 108 and Stansbury with 121.

In the overall merge of all classifications, Woods Cross (180), Bountiful (183) and Stansbury (197) were fourth, fifth and sixth behind Herriman, Timpanogos and Farmington.
