Issam Asinga Goes Under 20 Seconds In 200m, Breaks Noah Lyles' High School RecordPublished by
Asinga Burns Up Track For 9.89w/19.97 Double At Texas Tech; Adaejah Hodge Runs 11.11/22.31w By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor Joe Hale photo (New Balance Nationals Indoor) Montverde Academy's Issam Asinga continued an historic run of sprint performances Saturday at the Corky/Crofoot Shootout at Texas Tech in Lubbock, Texas. Asinga broke another record, this time smashing Noah Lyles' all-time high school 200 record while racing a collegiate field. He took third in 19.97 with a legal +1.3 wind. The only teen to run faster in the U.S. was Erriyon Knighton, who had turned professional by the time he went under 20 seconds and ran a best of 19.49 last year at 18 years old. Because he was already a pro, Track and Field News continued to recognize Lyles' 20.09 from 2016 as the high school best. Asinga was running unattached and competing for Celerity Athletics. He won the men's 100 meters in a wind-aided 9.89 seconds. It's the third time he has run under 9.90 in the 100 but all three races were wind-aided. He now owns the three fastest all-conditions times in history in the 100. In the 200, James Dadzie of Western Texas College, representing Ghana, won the race in 19.79, a world-leading time. Courtney Lindsey of Texas Tech was second in 19.94. Lindsey's time is the fastest wind-legal time in the NCAA so far this year. In the women's sprints, Asinga's Montverde teammate Adaejah Hodge ran a wind-legal 11.11 seconds for second place behind Oklahoma's Kennedy Blackmon (11.06). Hodge's time is a .01 second improvement on her best and is US#1 wind-legal time in the country. Hodge beat Blackmon in the 200 meters, running 22.31 with a +5.0 tailwind. That's the second-fastest time in high school history under all conditions. More news |
