Brody Buffington Runs 10.35/21.06 Double To Power Catocin To 1A Victory, But DQ'd In 4x200

Brody Buffington may come from a small school, but the senior showed major talent this spring in the sprints as he became the Maryland all-time leader in the 100 and 200 meters. 

Buffington led Catocin to the Class 1A boys title with his victories in the 100 (10.35) and 200 (21.06), both of which were run into a headwind. He also anchored the winning 4x100 relay, but for the second time this year officials DQ'd him for what it deemed unsportsmanlike conduct while crossing the line in the 4x200. 

His best times, 10.15 seconds and 20.59, mark him as one of the top sprinters in the country. 

Led by senior Samantha Heyison’s two wins in the throws, the Urbana girls scored 82.50 points to repeat as the 4A state champions at the MPSAA Track and Field Championships in Landover, Md. held May 25-27. Heyison won the discus (121-8) and the shot put (35-11). 

North Point sophomore Cohren Corbin won the 100 (12.05) and 200 (24.72), while teammate Corinne Ball won the long jump (18-5.25) and triple jump (37-0.50). 

The Bowie boys scored 61 points to claim the 4A title. 

In the sprints, Henry A. Wise’s Mykel Norman won the 200 (21.58) and 100 (10.61). 

Nicholas C. Spikes of Paint Branch won the 400 meters in 47.80. 

Chimdy Onoh of Dundalk won the discus (174-8) and shot put (57-6).  

The River Hill girls scored 62 points to win the 3A crown as freshman Marella Virmani won the 800 (2:14.24) and 1,600 (4:53.71). The top three finishers in the 1,600 were all freshmen and all clocked under five minutes. 

In the 3,200, teammate and sister, Lauren Virmani was runner-up (10:54.51), as North Hagers’ Lauren Stine won in 10:54.42 in a photo-finish. 

Governor Thomas Johnson scored 56 points to win the Class 3A title. 

In Class 2A, the Oak Mills boys and girls swept the state titles once again. The boys dominated the field tallying 139 points as senior Shane King won the 100 (10.96) and 200 (21.91) while teammate Trevin McHargh was second in both. Oakland won the 400 as well with Xavier Doctor clocking 48.29. 

Doctor and King also ran on the team’s winning 4x400 relay (3:22.25). 

Antonio Camacho-Bucks of Centennial won the 3A titles in the 1,600 (4:14.71) and 3,200 (9:29.06) and took fourth in the 800 (1:55.63). 

In girls Class 2A action, Friendly Senior’s Tressia Davis, a sophomore, won the 100 (12.32), 200 (24.96) and 400 (55.12). 

In the distance events, Overlea senior Temi Ariyo won the 1,600 (4:58.20), 3,200 (10:47.80) and was third in the 800. 

The Western Tech girls claimed the Class 1A title again with 106 points, holding off Smithsburg (92 points).

In the distance events, Mountain Ridge’s Mary Delaney had a record-setting day, winning the 800 (2:14.25), 1,600 (5:01.28) and 3,200 (11:03.02), all 1A meet records. 

In the sprints, Allegany sophomore Avery Miller won the girls 100 (12.39), 200 (25.40), and 400 (55.77). 

In boys Class 1A, Fort Hill junior Carter Hess broke a meet record in the discus with a throw of 168 feet.
