Georgia State Meet Recap 2024

GEORGIA STATE MEET

Jasmine Robinson Runs No. 2 All-Time 39.89 300 Hurdles; Tommy Latham Breaks State Record With 4:01.66 1,600; Ervin Pearson III Runs US#2 45.35; Maurice Gleaton Jr. Doubles 10.31/20.89; Sidi Njie 20.80/45.37

One the top distance runners in the country, Marist’s Tommy Latham, added to his growing legacy this weekend.

At the Georgia High School State Track and Field Championships held at Barron Stadium in Rome, Latham, a junior, won the Class 6A 1,600 in an overall state record time of 4:01.66 for US#2.

Latham, who recently verbally committed to the University of North Carolina, also won the 3,200 in 9:15.36 and ran on the second place 4x800 relay guiding Marist to a runner-up team finish with 52 points. 

Langston Hughes won the 6A championship again with 71 points as one of the nations top sprinters Maurice Gleaton Jr. defended his titles in the 100 (10.31) and 200 (20.89). 

In the 300 hurdles Alpharetta’s Vincent Nnanna clocked 37.11 to win in a US#14 time. 

In the field, the second-ranked long jumper in the nation, Luke Stradley of Etowah, won the event with a mark of 24-9 and finished second in the triple (49-6) with a US#10 jump. New Manchester’s Nicolas Crosswhite soared to a state title and a US#8 jump of 49-7. 

In the high jump, Stradley and Malachi Yehudah of Langston Hughes, the nation’s No. 2 jumper, both cleared 7 feet, but Stradley claimed the title on fewer misses. 

The Woodward Academy girls team defended the 6A team title with a dominating performance in the sprints. Chelsea Williams paced the team with the US#23 time in the 200, running 23.52, as teammate Taylor Gullatte was second (23.82). Williams also won the 100 (11.95), while Gullette was third (11.97). In the 400, Woodward’s Madison Gardner won in 53.62, US#15. 

Woodward also picked up a first-place finish in the 300 hurdles from Sydney Glee as she won in 41.95 (US#16) as she edged out Sarah Head of Lee County 41.98. 

The three all ran on Woodward’s winning 4x100 (45.93) and 4x400 (3:42.68). The 4x400 improved to US#11. 

In the distance events, Oluwatosin Awoleye of South Cobb ran US#5 2:05.55 to win the 800. Blessed Trinity’s Claire Petersen won the 1,600 (4:56.33) and 3,200 (10:49.04).

7A - Carrollton High School 

North Cobb standout sophomore Jasmine Robinson was the standout performer of the entire meet, running to a US#1 time of 39.89 in the 300 hurdles to break the state record. It's the No. 2 time in history behind Sydney McLaughlin.

Robinson also ran 24.05 to win the 200, 13.61 for second place the 100 hurdles, and jumped 18-0w for seventh in the long jump.

Competing on their own track, the Carrollton boys won the program’s first title since 2021, scoring 58.50 points to edge out George Walton (55 points). 

In the sprints, Westlake’s Sidi Njie – US#6 in the 200 — won the state title in the event in 20.80 and was second in the 400 in a US#3 time of 45.37. Buford’s Ervin Pearson III won the 400 in a US#2 time of 45.35 breaking the state record.  

In the distance events George Walton Joseph Minecci won the 800, 1600 and was third in the 3,200. 

The Westlake girls went back-to-back scoring 68 points getting past a tough Marietta 65 points. The team was led by senior Jaden Billings who won the 100 hurdles in a U.S. #6 time of 13.45 and ran on the winning 4x1 (45.56), and second place 4x2. She was also third in the 300 hurdles. 

Olivia Harris of Buford, who has the third-fastest time in the 400 in the country, won the 400 in 53.69. 

In the field Daculas’ Dana Nembhard won the triple jump in a US#15 mark of 41-1.25 and claimed the long jump (19-1.50).

In the distance events, Marietta’s Mary Nesmith won the 1,600 (4:56.77) and 3,200 (10:34.14)

5A - Carrollton 

It wasn’t easy but the Lithia Springs girls claimed the program’s first title, tallying 58 points to beat out Harris County (56 points) for the 5A crown. Senior Destiny Jenkins led the way winning the 200 and finishing second in the 100. She also ran on the runner-up 4x1 and 4x2 relays. 

In the field, sophomore Ava Kitchings of Greater Atlanta Christian won the long jump soaring 20-6 for a US#8 jump. 

The Chapel Hill boys scored 70 points to win the 5A title. 

Senior Jadon Thomason of Calhoun won the 110 hurdles (13.98) and 300 hurdles (37.25). 

4A - Albany

It was a clean sweep in 4A for Westminster winning the boys and girls state crowns. 

In boys 4A, Westminster dominated the distance event led by Joseph Jacquot, who won the 1,600 (4:15.05) and 3,200 (9:09.52). Westminster claimed the top three spots in the 1,600. 

In the hurdles, Dominiq Northington of Woodland ran to a US#6 time of 13.65. He also ran 10.56 for second in the 100 meters and 21.84 for seventh in the 200. 

Miller Grove senior Ali Dargan won the 100 (10.44) and 200 (20.86) for US#20. 

Jared Moore of Starr’s Mill won the discus with a throw of 183-6 and claimed the shot put in 61-7.50. 

The Westminster girls claimed back-to-back titles with 93 points. 

In the sprints, Druid Hills’ sprinting dynamic duo went 1-2 in the 100 as Sanaa Frederick took first 11.45 and Sole Frederick was second in 11.45. In the 200, Sanaa was first in 23,16 and Sole was second (23.32). 

In the distance events, Zahara Bernal of Pace Academy won the 3,200 (10:36.84) and was second in the 1,600. 

3A - Albany 

The Sandy Creek boys defended the 3A title easily with 91 points. The team was led by Dalen Penson who won the triple jump in 49-5.50, US#11, and the 110 hurdles (14.05). 

Oconee County’s Aaron Brodrick won the 3,200 in 9:05.58 and ran on the winning 4x8 relay. 

In girls 3A, Wesleyan claimed its first title since 2018 with 80 points. Wesleyan picked up a majority of the points in the distance events, capturing the top three spots in the 3,200, and going 2-3-4 in the 1,600. Anne McSweeney also won the 800 for the team. 

In the field, Bremen’s Marley Derringer tied for US#2 in the high jump, clearing 6  feet. 

2A - Commerce 

The Athens Academy boys and Landmark Christian girls both defended the 2A state titles. 

Landmark Christian was paced by Moriah Campbell, who won the 300 hurdles, placed second in the 100 hurdles and 100 dash. 

Maya Davis of Athens Academy impressed in the distant events, winning the 3,200, 1,600 and 800. 

1A Division 1 - Rome 

In 1A Division 1, the Darlington boys claimed the program’s first state title in dramatic fashion, finishing with 92 points, one ahead of Athens Academy (91 points). Darlington won the 4x400 relay in 3:22.37, edging out Athens Christian 3:22.91 for the victory. 

The Oglethorpe County girls scored 81 points to win the team tittle. 

1A Division 2 - Commerce 

In Division 2, the Charlton County girls won the team championship with 59 points, the boys title went to Mitchell County with 77 points - both first state titles for the two programs. 

Greenville’s Antavious Richardson won the 100, 200 and 400 titles. 

In the distance events, Julian Council of Georgia Military Greene won the 800, 1,600 and 3,200.
