This time, Jefferson Girls Pull In Front of Morgantown

The Jefferson girls didn’t leave anything to chance this time. A year after tying Morgantown for the Class AAA West Virginia state track and field title, Jefferson secured the crown with a defying victory in the 4x400 relay to score 87 points for the team title at Laidley Field in Charleston. Morgantown was runner-up with 77 points. 

The Jefferson 4x400 relay team clocked 4:03.95 with Hannah Phillips running the anchor. Phillips paced the team with wins in the 800 and 1,600. Teammate Jazmyn Taylor won the 100 (12.44), long jump (18-0.75) and also ran on the state-record breaking 4x200 (1:43.11). 

The Class AAA boys title went to Cabell Midland with 108 points, the program’s first title since 2016. Tristan Blatt set a state record in the 800 (1:51.12) and was third in the 1,600. Teammate Michael Lunsford easily won the shot put with a throw of 65-3.75. He is ranked US#7. 

In the distance events, Hurricane’s Ty Steorts set a state meet record in the 1,600 at 4:07.75. He also added a win in the 3,200 (8:58.32)

The Winfield girls and boys swept the Class AA state titles. The girls repeated as state champ with 99.83 points. 

Individually, Oak Glen’s Hannah Kilner won the 1,600, 3,200 and was fourth in the 800.

The Winfield boys were paced by Justin Lipscomb’s wins in the 800 (1:55.35), 1,600 (4:13.77) and 3,200 (9:06.77). Winfield swept the top three spots in the 800 and 1,600. 

In Class A, the Buffalo boys and Williamstown girls both defended their state titles. 

Buffalo’s Nicholas Pitchford won the 800 (1:56.87), 1,600 (4:17.20) and 3,200 (9:29.04).

Williamstown was paced by standout junior Alyssa Sauro who won the 1,600 (5:05.54) and 3,200 (10:41.77) and set a state record in the 800 of 2:15.69. She was also part of the first-place 4x800 relay (9:50.43).

Class AAA: Cabell Midland boys 108 points; Jefferson girls 87 points - RESULTS

Class AA: Winfield boys 123 points; Winfield girls 99.83 points  - RESULTS

Class A: Buffalo boys 118 points; Williamstown girls 134 points  - RESULTS
