Under windy conditions, which included some events being suspended, athletes and teams found a way to power through and produce some historic performances at the Wyoming State High School Track and Field Championships held May 16-18 at Harry Geldien Stadium in Casper. In 4A, the Sheridan boys and girls swept the team titles. Sheridan senior Addie Pendergast lowered her own state record in the 400, clocking 54.62 and set a state record in the 300 hurdles (42.69), leading the Broncs to their first team title since 1983. In the sprints, Taliah Morris of Cheyenne East set overall state records in the 100 (11.68 in the prelims for the record, 11.93 finals) and a 4A Class record in the 200 (23.45). She also set a state record in the long jump, soaring 20-8.50 (6.31m), a US#6 mark. On the boys side, Sheridan’s Chance Morris won the 100 (10.93) and ran a state-record time of 21.11 in the 200 to guide the Broncs to the 4A crown. Teammate Aiden O'Leary won the 300 hurdles in 37.00. Kavin Hoff had to wait an extra day, but the Natrona County junior won the pole vault clearing 15-6 (4.73m) on Saturday morning. The event was suspended due to high winds on Friday. The Lander Valley girls claimed the 3A team title with 116.50 points, the first state title since 2001. In 2A, it came down to the wire as the Kemmerer girls’ victory in the 4x400 (4:17.12) sealed the deal on a 2A state title — the first in 40 years. The team finished with 113 points to edge out Big Piney (107 points). Layne Walker guided Kemmerer with victories in the 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles, defending her titles from a year ago, and added a win in the pole vault. Big Piney swept the 400 through the 3,200 titles, which included going 1-4 in the 1,600. Gavin Stafford led Big Horn to the 2A state title with 157 points. The senior won the 100 (10.58) and set a state record in the prelims, clocking 10.31, current US#19 time.
