Spikes Brothers Win Three Sprint Titles, Two Relays, For Paint Branch By Mary Albl of DyeStat The fastest spikes belonged to Paint Branch's Nicholas Spikes at the MPSAA Track and Field Championships in Landover, held May 21-23. Spikes, along with brother Roman Spikes and teammates Jacob Martin and Aaron Henderson clocked a US#17 time of 1:24.96 to crush the previous meet record of 1:26.25 set in 2012 by Henry A Wise. It was also an an all-time state record. The four also won the 4x400 relay (3:15.34). Individually, Spikes won the 400 in a US#17 time of 46.59. He also claimed the 200 (21.15). Roman Spikes won the 100 (10.49) and was second in the 200 (21.28). As a team, Paint Branch finished runner-up with 68 points, while Governor Thomas Johnson won the title with 92 points. In girls 4A, the Woodlawn girls followed up their indoor title with an outdoor one. The team sealed the deal with a victory in the 4x400 (3:52.82). Arayana Ladson led the way with a first-place victory in the 100 (11.58), second in the 200 and 100 hurdles. The 3A boys title came down to the final event as Digital Harbor captured first place in the 4x400 relay in 3:16.31 to finish with 73 points and edge out Oakland Mills (63 points). Digital Harbor’s 4x200 relay also won in a meet record time of 1:26.4. Individually, Digital Harbor’s LaMont Johnson broke a meet record in the the 400 in 46.93 and was second in the 200. In the distance events, Howard’s Joseph Ensor won the 800, 1,600, and 3,200. The 3A girls title went to Arundel as the team swept the 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400. In 2A, the Westlake boys swept the relays winning the 4x100, 4x200, 4x400 and 4x800. The Hereford girls edged out Largo, 57-53 to claim the 2A crown. The team was led by senior Rebecca Hillier’s victory in the 3,200 and second place in the 1,600. The 1A The Smithburg girls claimed the small-school title with 112 points In 1A action, Furious Trammel of Catocin broke the 58-year-old meet record in the long jump (23-1.50) soaring 23-9.75. He also won the 400 (48.34) and triple jump (44-2.50). In the field, Fort Hill’s Carter Hess claimed the discus title with 189-3 breaking his own meet record. The Cambridge South Dorchester boys won the 1A team trophy (80.5 points). The Smithsburg girls claimed the team title with 112 points. On the track, Allegany’s Avery Smith swept the sprints winning the 100, 200 and 400.
