KANSAS STATE MEET

Olathe West Boys, Olathe Northwest Girls Win 6A Titles In Kansas

By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor

National pole vault leader Bryce Barkdull of Andover Central jumped a little bit under his best this season of 17-9, but won his second straight Kansas state title with 17-2 last weekend at the Kansas state track and field championships at Cessna Stadium on the campus of Wichita State University.

Olathe Northwest won the 6A girls team title with 77 points. Thirty of those came from Val Galligan, who won the shot put, discus and javelin for the Ravens.

In one of the fastest girls sprint races in state history, Manhattan's Hanna Pellant won the 6A girls 100 meters in a wind-legal time of 11.59. Olathe East's Damiya Richards finished second in 11.62 and Manhattan's Harli Omli was third in 11.70.

Wind was a factor in the sprint races. In the Class 5A boys 100 meters final, Topeka Seaman's Aaron Merritt ran 10.32 with a +4.8 tailwind. Kapaun junior Jack Guthridge won the silver in 10.40, and DeSoto senior Carson Miller ran third in 10.46. Merritt ran a wind-legal 10.51 in the prelims.

Guthridge won the 400 meters in 48.36 seconds.

Andale won its eighth 4A boys title since 2013, with 70.5 points.

Abilene's Judah Bowell swept the 4A hurdles, winning the 110-meter event in 14.84 ahead of Andale’s Harrison Potucek (14.96) and Bo Kaiser (14.96). Bowell then won the 300 hurdles in 39.96.

Wichita Trinity senior Clay Shively led a 1-2-3 finish for his team in the Class 3A 1,600 meters. He ran  4:15.79, followed by teammate Samuel Ferguson in 4:16.50 and Caleb Tofteland in 4:19.51.

Shively also won the 800 meters in 1:54.60.

Linkon Cure from Goodland won the 3A 110 hurdles in 14.52 and the 300 hurdles in 38.90.

Hesston sophomore Ashley Lehman won four events for her team: the 100, 200, 400 and pole vault.
