Jase Burton Leads 1-2-3 Star Valley Finish In Wyoming

Jase Burton beat his teammate Habtamu Wetzel, a two-time state champion, in order to win the Wyoming Class 4A boys cross country final on Saturday at the Little America Golf Course in Cheyenne.

The seniors went 1-2 and junior teammate Colton Cranney was third as Star Valley scored 42 points to easily win the team championship. Burton's winning time of 15:46.6 was more than half a minute faster than Wetzel's 16:18.4.

The girls 4A team race was decided by one point. Cheyenne Central edged Natrona County 68-69 and had fifth runner Ella Montano to thank. She finished 23rd, nine spots ahead of Natrona's fifth. 

Sophomore Maggie Madsen of Cheyenne East won the 4A girls race by nearly 24 seconds, in 18:26.4.

In Class 3A, Kinley Cooley also won her race with time to spare. Cooley, of Powell, ran 19:08.2 to beat Cody duo Reina Wachob (19:38.7) and Hallie Schramm (19:44.7). 

Cody won the girls team title with 37 points. 

Worland and Buffalo runners took up 10 of the top 16 places in the 3A boys final, which made for a very tight team race. Worland, led by individual champion Trajn Swalstad (16:08.0) beat Buffalo 41-42. 

Wyoming Indian's girls won the 2A girls title on a tiebreaker over Tongue River after both teams scored 34 points. Lyla Marney of Big Horn won the race in 19:45.3.

Wyoming Indian made it a sweep of the 2A titles, with the boys packing three into the top eight to win with 41 points. Jadeth Elder of Thermopolis won the race in 17:43.8.
