Lafayette Boys, Assumption Girls Win 3A Team Titles; Paul Van Laningham, Addison Moore Fastest Of The Day By Mary Albl of DyeStat It was an historic day in the 3A races at the Kentucky Cross Country State Championships on Saturday at Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington. The Lafayette boys put together a run for the books, scoring 85 points to win the Class 3A team title, becoming the first Lexington public school to accomplish the feat. The team took down favored defending champion Trinity of Louisville, placing all five in the top 25. Individually, Cooper junior Paul Van Laningham won the race in 15:19.8, becoming the first individual from his high school to claim a state title in any sport. The girls 3A scene featured repeat winners, as Woodford County junior Addison Moore defended her individual title from a season ago, winning in 18:06.82, and Assumption cruised to the team title with 56 points, half the total of the next team. Notre Dame commit Riku Sugie of Thomas Nelson ran to his third straight 2A title, easily winning in 15:22.5. Covington Catholic defended the team title with Will Sheets (15:42.4) and Joe Mayer (16:01.8) going 2-3. The Lexington Catholic girls cruised to a fourth consecutive title with 44 points, also the program’s ninth overall. Caroline Beiting of Lexington Catholic led the charge, winning in 18:27.2. Villa Madonna claimed the 1A boys title with 108 points with Collegiate’s James Gurley winning in 15:50.6. It was a dramatic finish in the girls 1A race as Lexington Christian and Beechwood both finished with 53 points. Lexington Christian’s sixth-place runner was the difference maker for the team to claim the title. Individually, Lilly Parke of Beechwood won her first state title (19:01.7) after placing second the last two years. Team Champions Class 3A: Lafayette boys 85 points; Assumption girls 56 points Class 2A: Covington Catholic boys 51 points; Lexington Catholic girls 44 points Class 1A: Villa Madonna boys 108 points; Lexington Christian girls 53 points (won tiebreaker over Beechwood) |
