Mateo Gros-Slovinsky Leads Whitman To State Title; Bethesda-Chevy Chase Edges Frederick By Mary Albl of DyeStat Improving every year, it all came together for senior Mateo Gros-Slovinsky on Saturday at the Maryland state cross country championships at Hereford High. Gros-Slovinsky covered the 3-mile course in 15 minutes, 44.7 seconds to win his first state individual title and lead his team, Walt Whitman, to a Class 4A team championship in the process. Walt Whitman put up 75 points with three in the top 15. Bethesda-Chevy Chase won the Class 4A girls crown with 72 points, edging out Frederick (74) by just two points. The Barons placed two runners in the top five. Richard Montgomery senior Emma Colavito won the race in 18:53.8. After placing second last season, senior Tsedeke Jakovics of Old Mill claimed the 3A title in 15:52.0, the only runner under 16 minutes. Thomas S Wootton placed three in the top 11 to win the team title. The Severna Park girls repeated as state champs easily, scoring 48 points, with all finishing in the top 25. North Hagerstown senior Lauren Stine churned out the fastest time of the day for any female runner, winning the 3A title in 18:23.4. Centennial swept the boys and girls 2A state titles. The boys had all five runners pace in the top 26. Individually, Southern-AA senior Eric Penkala repeated as the individual champion, winning by 15 seconds in 15:37.3, the fastest time of the day. Senior Riley Herdson guided Centennial to the 2A title winning her first individual state title in 19:12.5. Centennial scored 39 points as all five runners finished within the top 20. The Hartford Tech boys and girls claimed the 1A titles. In the boys race, Liberty senior Gregory Schellberg defended his title, lowering his winning time from a year ago in 16:19.2. The girls race was won by Hartford Tech senior Isabel Devos in 19:32.2.
