Mabel George Outlasts Oliva Holbrook In Sensational 800 Final For 1-2 In Kentucky History By Mary Albl of DyeStat The Assumption girls team was on a mission Saturday. At the Clark’s Pump-N-Shop Kentucky Track and Field State Championships at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, Mabel George, a junior, broke an overall state record in the 800, outleaning Campbell County's Olivia Holbrook, 2:09.42-2:09.45. She was part of the winning 4x800 relay (9:17.32) and fifth place 4x400. Teammate Leah Penick won the 1,600 in 4:54.33 and 3,200 (10:41.65), while Kylie Moore, a freshman, claimed the high jump (5-4) all in effort to help Assumption claim the 3A state team championship. In boys 3A, Trinity scored 77 points to claim the state crown. In the distance events, Paul Van Laningham of Cooper set an overall state meet record in the 1,600, clocking 4:08.25. The 3,200 saw a battle to the line as North Oldham’s senior Charley Townsend won in 9:06.37, while Lincoln Herald of Grant County was second (9:07.09). In the field, Trinity’s Rocco Pfeiffer won the discus (163-4) 2A - Friday, May 30 Caroline Beiting of Lexington Catholic led her team to a 2A state title as she won the 800 (2:17.14), 1,600 (4:58.77) and also ran on the winning 4x800 (10:04.88) and 4x400 (4:05.15) relays. The Covington Catholic boys were led by senior distance standout Will Sheets, who won the 800 (1:54.99), placed second in the 1,600 (4:17.52) and second in the 3,200 (9:27.44). The team also won the 4x200 (1:30.73). In the field, Covington Catholic's Paul Klosinski cleared 14-6 to win the pole vault. 1A - Thursday, May 29 Lexington Christian cruised to the 1A girls state championship with 117 points - the program’s first-ever title. The team dominated the track events led by sophomore Mahari Crumps, who won the 100 (12.41), fourth in the 200 (26.64) and also ran on the winning 4x100 (50.04) and 4x200 (1:46.06) relays. Kennedy Moughhamian won the 3,200 (11:11.12), was second in the 1,600 (5:06.61). Junior Laynie Hopper won the 300 hurdles (46.21) and was sixth in the 100 hurdles for the team. Junior Lily Parker of Beechwood highlighted the 1A girls, winning the 800 (2:15.96) and 1,600 (4:59.88), breaking 1A records in both events. She also added a third-place finish in the 3,200 (11:17.67). For the boys, Newport Central Catholic senior Charlie Ford raced to a 1A state record in the 200 (21.62), claimed the 100 (10.95) and placed fourth in the long jump. The Louisville Collegiate boys won the team title with 53 points, edging out Williamsburg (46 points). Louisville Collegiate senior Roman Sierpina helped his team to a state title as he won the 800 (1:55.53) and 1,600 (4:30.97) and was the third leg for the winning 4x400 (3:26.86).
