Alan Hanna Jumps US#2 7-3.50 To Break 30-Year-Old Meet Record; Harli Omli Wins Sprint Triple

Alan Hanna soared to new heights during his final Kansas prep state track meet. At Cessna Stadium on the campus of Wichita State University, the Maize senior broke a 30-year-old 6A high jump record on Friday, May 30 as he soared over 7-3.50 to set a new 6A state record, breaking Jason Archibald’s record from 1995.

Hanna’s mark was also a US#2 and the second highest in Kansas prep history. The University of Kansas commit made a solid attempt 7-5.75, but fell short. This was his second straight state title. 

In the team race, Olathe West repeated as the 6A state champs as Cade Zimmerman, a junior, led the team with a victory in the javelin, throwing 195-1. The team also  won the 4x100 relay (41.49) and second in the 4x800. 

The Shawnee Mill-Valley girls won the 6A title with 70 points, holding off Manhattan (64 points) despite a huge effort from senior Harli Omli in the sprints. The Manhattan senior won the 100 (11.58), 200 (23.99) and was fourth in the 400 (54.50). 

Class 5A

The Kapaun Mount Carmel boys put up a dominating 114 points to repeat as the 5A state champions. Senior Jack Guthridge led the team with wins in the 100 (10.65), 200 (21.50) and 400 (47.08). Teammates Daniel Enriquez won the 1,600 (4:06.58) and 3,200 (9:06.33), Dawson Grabendike claimed the 110 hurdles (14.10) and 300 hurdles (37.73), while Jackson Daniel threw a US#12 throw in the javelin with 207-1. 

St. Thomas Aquinas’ Joey Goodenow won the shot put (60-7.25) and discus (190-1) titles. 

The St. James Academy  girls put up 77 points to repeat as the 5A state champs. 

On the track, Seaman junior Ryin Miller swept the distant events winning the 800 (2:11.14), 1,600 (4:57.33) and 3,200 (10:19.53). The 3,200 was a highlight. Matched up with Katelyn Rupe of Salina Central, Miller took the lead late and won the race. Rupe was second in 10:22.11. 

Class 4A

The Andale boys and girls swept the 4A team. 

For the boys, they defended the state title with a strong effort from senior Harrison Potucek who won the 110 hurdles (14.59) and was second 300 hurdles (40.27). Andale also was second in the 4x100 relay, clocking 42.83. 

The Andale girls were pace day junior Rylee Meyer, who won the 100 (12.06) and placed second 200 (25.13). 

The star of the 4A meet was Wellington sophomore Dre Zeka, who won three gold medals. She claimed the long jump title in a mark of 19-0.75, which broke the 48-year old 4A state record that was established by Ottawa’s Julie Wilson in 1977. She added golds in the high jump (5-8) and 400 (57.44).

Class 3A 

Hesston’s Ashley Lehman, a junior, showed elite talent and vesatility by winning the pole vault (12-4), 400 (54.65), 200 (24.63) and 100 (11.99).

The Holcomb boys repeated as state champs scoring 84 points. Brody Deniston won the 800 (1:56.23) and was second in the 1,600 (4:21.05) and 3,200 (9:13.50). Holcomb also won the 4x800 relay in 7:47.42. 

The Beloit girls finished with 74 points to cruise to the 3A title. Senior Tatum Seyfert led the way winning the shot put (46-4.25) and discus (147-7).

Class 2A

The Central Heights boys team won the state title with a strong showing in the distance events. Senior Cody Hammond won the 800 (1:56.61) and 1,600 (4:25.21) and was third in the 3,200 as teammate Connor Burkdoll led a 1-2-3 finish in the 3,200 winning in 9:40.72. The team also won the 4x800 relay title in 8:12.49. 

In the throws, Cooper Pendergrass of Central Christian Academy became the program’s first state champion when he won the shot put with a throw of 55-2. He finished sixth in the discus. 

The Hoxie girls claimed the 2A title. In the distance events, Smith Center sophomore Madison Howland won the 800 (2:16.23), 1,600 (5:03.47) and 3,200 (10:57.06). 

Class 1A

The Axtell boys defended their title with 90 points while the Ellis girls scored 58 points to win the team championship. Junior Avery Boydston paced her team with wins in the 1,600 (5:13.83) and 3,200 (11:23.93) and was third in the 800.
