By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor Here are summaries of the first-round matchups: WEST REGIONAL Catholic (Baton Rouge) LA 77, Houston Lamar TX 72 The Texas 6A champions dominated the sprints, with Bailey Hashimi taking the 100 in 10.38 and Jordan Godfrey winning the 200 in 20.87. Lamar also crushed Catholic BR in the 4x100 and 4x400. Catholic got big points in the field events, with John Henry Overton and Ryan Klester both jumping 14 feet for a 1-2 finish in the pole vault. Alex Huffine led a 1-2-3 sweep for the Bears in the long jump. Sophomore William DeCuir won the 800 and 1,600. Kearney NE 61, Ankeny IA 57 Luke Brachle cleared 6-10 to win the high jump and Zaire LaGrone-Miller won a big matchup with Ankeny's Tyler Sickerson in the 100 and he also won the 200 as the Nebraska champions knocked out the state champs from neighboring Iowa. The close matchup tipped in Kearney's favor with a 1-2-3 sweep in the long jump led by Treyton Norman (22-9). Ethan Zuber's triple (1:52.53/4:10.69/8:59.60) helped give Ankeny big advantages in the distance races. Hamilton AZ 75, Servite CA 61 Servite's young sprint group served notice as a rising force in high school track this spring and the combination of freshmen Jordan and Jace Wells and Kamil Pelovello and sophomores Benjamin Harris and Robert Gardner gave the CIF champions lots of firepower in the sprints and relays. But the Arizona champions had answers in the distance events and won five of six field events. Hamilton got big contributions from Camden Ehrlich in the long jump (23-5.75) and Daniel-John Onwuamaegbu in the triple jump (48-10). Zarian Rodriguez led the Huskies to sweeps of the 1,600 and 3,200. Cherokee Trail CO 87.5, Mountain View ID 58.5 The Colorado champions Cherokee Trail, who are becoming a regular in the tournament, dominated the hurdles and were stronger in the sprints and got big points in the jumps to advance to the second round. Solomon Griffen swept the hurdles events with 14.36 in the 110s and 41.74 in the 300s. Peyton Sommers and Kaelan Kombo went 1-2 in the 400 meters for the Cougars. A bright spot for Mountain View was Joseph Miraya, one of the top throwers in the entire tournament. He won the shot put (62-8) and discus (191-4). Bentonville AR 84, Olathe West KS 57 The Arkansas state champions returned to the John Dye Dual Meet Tournament with a strong opener against the Kansas state champs. The Tigers' combination of distance power with Brian Burns, Matthew Shelly and Owen Kelley, along with thrower Will Neumann is going to be a difficult for any team to match. Olathe West's Tevyn Gasaway edged out Bentonville's Kayden Brown in two close sprint races, 10.56 to 10.57 in the 100 and 21.53 to 21.59 in the 200. Sioux Falls Lincoln SD 89.5, Sheridan WY 51.5 Lincoln of Sioux Falls returned to the tournament and posted a big score againt the Wyoming champions. This dual was closer than it looks. In an exciting 200 meters, Lincoln's Griffen Fischer beat one of the fastest Wyoming sprinters in state history, Chance Morris, 21.43 to 21.45. Lincoln's depth in the distance races led to an 18-0 advantage in the 1,600 and 3,200 meters, spearheaded by sophomore Tyrus Needles, who won both. Sheridan struck hard in the pole vault with a 1-2-3 sweep with Cole Bunting (14-6), Shaw Walker (14-6) and Jackson Brewer (14-0). American Fork UT 89.5, Shadow Ridge NV 47.5 Distance running is what American Fork is known for but on this year's state championship team it was part of a larger picture. The Cavemen had a complete squad in 2025 with big point potential in the field events and hurdles. In races from 400 to 3,200 meters, AF held a 34-2 advantage. Cael Flinders (48.24) and Kaden Fairbanks (48.48) went 1-2 for American Fork in the 400, while Austin Plewe (1:51.42) and Ryker Bement (1:51.91) went 1-2 in the 800. Ryker Miller won the pole vault at 15-3 and also the long jump at 22-8.25. Shadow Ridge's Kamari Mingo won the 100, 200 and anchored the winning 4x100 and 4x200 relays. Kamiakin WA 75.5, Jesuit OR 69.5 The Northwest matchup was a nail-biter with only four events one of the teams enjoyed a 1-2 finish. And Kamiakin had three of them: Devin Crews and Latavious Medelez went 1-2 in the 300 hurdles, Jahmad Skinner and Drew Helms went 1-2 in the triple jump and Skinner and JaRae Long took the top spots in the high jump. The distance races featured Kellen Williams and Matthew Wroblewski of Jesuit taking on Ezra Teeples and Chase Kennard of Kamiakin in events where no team gained an advantage. Sprinter Grant Valley won the 100 and 200 for the Crusaders and anchored two relay wins. EAST REGIONAL Vestavia Hills AL 99, Pearl MS 47 The Alabama champion seems to always make a run in the tournament and Vestavia Hills beat perennial contender Hoover at its state meet. Against its neighbors to the west, Vestavia Hills had no trouble getting past Pearl of Mississippi. The Rebels won every event on the track except for the hurdles and short relays. Chase Webb tripled, winning the 100, 200 and 400 meters. John Hayes led sweeps for the team in the 1,600 and 3,200. Kingi McNair was exception for Pearl in the long jump (25-10) and triple jump (48-3.50). J'Karius Gilbert swept the hurdles for the Pirates. Toms River North NJ 93.5, East Lyme CT 56.5 The New Jersey Group 4 champions got through the first round with dominant sprints, hurdles and relays against the Connecticut State Open champons. Mamadi Diawara won a 200/400 double, added another win in the 110 hurdles and was part of a 3:10.31 4x400 relay. Taysaun Wilson ran 1:51.28 to win the 800 meters for the Mariners. Mordecai Ford jumped 6-5 to win the high jump and Jael Hester went 24-0.50 to take the long jump. Sam Leone (4:12.71) and Sean McCauley (9:09.09) led East Lyme to sweeps in both the 1,600 and 3,200 meters. Thomas Matlock added wins in the shot put (64-8) and discus (175-6). Homestead WI 74, Winnetka (New Trier) IL 72 The meet was so evenly matched that through seven events on the track, the score was 36 to 36. The difference was the relays, where the Wisconsin state champs won three of four (4x100, 4x200 and 4x800). Homestead thrower Terron McCall led a sweep of the shot put and also won the discus (184-3). Jemekhi Tally ran 1:51.21 to win the 800 meters. New Trier's Ben Crane led sweeps of the 1,600 and 3,200 meters and Michael Gorelick and Charles Hayes both jumped 6-4 in the high jump for a 1-2 finish there. Oliver Neuenschwander (pole vault) and Dylan Benjamin (triple jump) also won. Mallard Creek NC 85,Buford GA 52 Mallard Creek, the North Carolina Class 4A champion, returned to the tournament with an impressive first-round win over Buford of Georgia. The Mavericks were able to match Buford's sprint strength and won an incredible 4x400 relay (3:11.57 to 3:13.62) and also got a big swing in the hurdles and ruled the distance races. Junior Nyan Brown was a standout in the hurdles, taking the 110s (14.09) and the 300s (37.06). Freshman Kameron Bethea won the 100 (10.48) and 200 (21.18) for Buford, which also got wins from Noah Nixon in the shot put and Marcus Rasberry in the discus. Columbus FL 92, Ridge View SC 56 Florida's Class 4A champions returned to the tournament after making it to the East finals last year and overwhelmed the South Carolina champions by scoring in every event except the 400-meter hurdles. Anthony Scarcello won the 1,600 meters and 3,200 meters for Columbus, which had big advantages in both events. Zamarion Lawson won the 200 in 21.21 seconds and Adrian Cardero won the 400 in 47.57. Remington Goins won the javelin with 198-7. Quency Grant swept the hurdles for Ridge View, Amari Stevenson won the triple jump (46-10) and Tyler Drayton won the high jump (6-2.75). Bloomington North IN 86, Trinity (Louisville) KY 46 Can Indiana pull out a win for the third time in five years? Bloomington North did not win the state title in Indiana's one-size-fits-all state meet, but penciled out to be superior Lawrence North in a dual format. Bloomington North overcame Trinity's easy wins in the sprints by sweeping all the points out of the hurdles. Benjamin Boland and Alan Hayes led the way with 1-2 finishes in both events. Sensational half-miler Caleb Winders (1:46.85) wont he 800 meters and anchored the US#9 4x800 (7:35.37). The Cougars also won four of six field events. Hank Scherer won the 100 and 200 for Trinity and Carter Vinson added a win in the 400. Bullis School MD 90, Colonial Forge VA 50 Quincy Wilson and Co. made the tourmanent and used its overwhelming sprints and relays speed to beat the Virginia state champions. Bullis' lack of depth in the field events may eventually catch up, but in the first round Conner Salmin (10.51/20.97), Wilson (44.10) and Colin Abrams (1:49.37) were too much to handle. Bullis won all three relays, but the 4x100 was a barn-burner, 40.56 to 40.69. Colonial Forge scored 40 of its 50 points in the field events, while Bullis managed just 13 off the track. Brian Harris jumped 24-0.75 to win the long jump and 47-1.25 to win the horizontal jumps and Fa'asipa Maea and Mason McConnell ruled the shot and discus rings. State College PA 93, LaSalle Academy RI 57 The Pennsylvania state champions have a lethal combination with sprinter Jesse Myers (10.34/20.93), distance standout Isaac Oppermann (4:11/9:04), discus/javelin thrower Nathan Haas (177-2/204-4) and pole vaulter Adam Bell (15-6). The Little Lions had too much depth for LaSalle. Jalen Moseley shined for the Rhode Island champions, sweeping the hurdles (14.18/37.67) and Garrett Giroux-Pezzullo led a 1-2-3 sweep of the 400 with 48.75. More news |
