WEST REGIONAL Humble Atascocita TX 88, Chandler AZ 53 You know what they say about basketball tournaments: Match-ups are everything. It turns out to be true in track and field, too. After victories by 11, 18 and 3 points, Texas 6A runner-up Humble Atascocita had the right formula to beat Arizona’s state champions by 35. The Maxwell twins, Mia and Mariah, won the 100 and 200 in 11.04 (US#2) and 22.93, respectively. They won both horizontal jumps, Mia with 42-7.75 in the triple jump and Mariah with 19-7 in the long. The twins were also on the 4x100 relay that ran a US#2 of 44.40 to Chandler's 45.13. Another Atascocita doubler was Jayden Kimble in the throws, 45-1 and 165-11 (US#7). For the Arizona champions from Chandler, hurdler Imani Galera-Young won her specialties in 13.69 and 41.50. Teammate Sniyah Cade was second in the 200, second in the long jump and part of the winning 4x400 relay.
EAST REGIONAL Union Catholic NJ 81, Bullis MD 56 In a rematch of last year’s East final, Union Catholic kept alive its shot at a repeat national championship. The New Jersey school has won its duals by 63, 91, 36 and 25 points during this tournament. Last year when these same two teams met in the East final, Union Catholic beat Bullis 73-62. In six events – 800, 1,600, 3,200, pole vault, shot put, discus – Union Catholic scored a 9-0 sweep for a collective margin of 54-0. Union Catholic sophomore Paige Sheppard set national records for her class, winning the 800 in 2:01.50 and 1,600 in 4:32.10. Her 1,600 is US#2 (No. 4 in prep history), and her 800 is US#3. Another soph, Cayleigh Kaiser, clocked 10:32.94 in the 3,200. Union Catholic’s Taylor Cox, a three-time national champion headed to Georgia in the fall, won the 100 hurdles in a US#4 of 13.18, followed by three sub-14 hurdlers from Bullis. Bullis won the three sprint relays: US#4 of 44.80 in the 4x100, US#4 of 1:33.84 in the 4x200, US#1 of 3:33.30 in the 4x400 (No. 3 all-time). Thankfully for Bullis, the sprint medley and distance medley were not part of scoring. UC is US#1 in both and broke the national record in the DMR. Bullis’ 4x400 included Sydney Sutton, who ran US#3 of 22.70 and US#2 of 51.23 for wins in the 200 and 400. Bullis’ Payton Payne won the 100 in 11.39. Freshman Parker Coes took the long jump at 21-0.
