National High School Records Through the Years Girls Outdoor Record – Road 10K Karlene Herrell Erickson (Wheeler Central High School, Bartlett, Nebraska) Performance – 33 minutes, 29 seconds Date – Oct. 12, 1981 Place – Boston, Massachusetts Race – Bonne Belle 10k Previous Record – 33:51 by Erickson 8 days earlier, October 4, 1981, in Purchase, New York Erickson was a 16-year-old sophomore and already a veteran road runner, having run her first marathon (3:13:47) at 13. Interviewed at 14 after winning a 15k in Littleton, Colo., she said, “I felt pretty good but later … I just died. But I just kept on going. I never quit a race. I don’t think I ever will.” One month after this race, she ran 2:41:50 for a marathon in Omaha in her home state. She won multiple Nebraska state championships and later ran dozens of marathons.
