University Boys, Cabell Midland Girls Win First AAAA Titles In Cross Country By Mary Albl of DyeStat In the first four-class WVSSAC state meet on Saturday, Nov. 1, streaks kept rolling and several champs repeated on a cool morning at Cabell Midland in Ona. No matter the classification, the University boys cross country team doesn't seem to skip a beat. University extended its dynasty with a seventh straight championship, scoring 56 points to edge Morgantown (67). Sophomore Micah Gainer led the way winning in 15:56.19, while teammate Ethan Conroy was right behind in 15:59.63. Host Cabell Midland captured the girls team title with 45 points by placing four runners in the top 10. Morgantown was second (62) and 2024 Class AAA champion University was third (115). Brenna Tipton of Wheeling Park won the individual crown in 18:16.89, while Cabell Midland’s Savannah Pritt was runner-up in 18:41.87. In boys Class AAA, Trevor George led the way for Elkins as he crossed first in 15:57.82 and helped his teammates to the championship trophy with 49 points, with Bridgeport (87) edging Grafton (87) on the tiebreak for second. George won the Class AA title last year. The Bridgeport girls secured their first team championship with 65 points, placing all five scorers in the top 20 in the Class AAA race. Maysen Fletcher of Herbert Hoover repeated as individual champion in 18:16.36, guiding the Huskies to a runner-up finish. Doddridge County packed five in the top 18 to win the Class AA trophy with 60 points, over Lincoln (71). Tyler Consolidated junior Amos Kimble won his second straight state title in 16:32.76. The Frankfort girls edged a pair of contenders with 66 points, holding off Braxton County (71) and Lincoln (71) on the tiebreak. Ravenswood senior Riley Sotomayer won in 20:15.14. In Class A, Charleston Catholic claimed the boys team title with 44 points, stacking three in the top five with junior Peter Basdekis taking the win in 16:54.78, while teammate Will Barton finished in second in 17:00.37. St. Marys won a tight race with 57 points, ahead of Trinity (68) and Charleston Catholic (73) in the girls Class A race. Charleston Catholic made it a program sweep for the individual titles, as Bella Boggs repeated as individual champion in 19:55.40.
