By Mary Albl of DyeStat

A year after making history as Moanalua High’s first pair of state cross country champions since 1993, Sadie Krueger and James Millare did it again. On Saturday at the  Honolulu Marathon/HHSAA Cross Country Championships, held at Central Oahu Regional Park, the duo repeated as HHSAA Division 1 individual champions, reaffirming their place among Hawaii’s all-time greats.

Returning from injury, Krueger, a sophomore, stormed to victory in 18:03, the fastest time ever recorded at the state meet, just one second faster than her mark from last year. Ashlyn Jacobsen (Campbell) placed second in 18:39.

In the boys race, Millare, a senior, successfully defended his title in 16:00, finishing 41 seconds ahead of Stephen Kozuma (Radford) in 16:41.

The ʻIolani boys captured their fourth consecutive team title with 73 points, led by Ian Kawamura (third in 16:48) and Nicolas Moses (fourth in 16:55).

Kalaheo earned the girls team championship with 61 points, placing runners 6-7-8 to seal the win.

Division 2

It came down to just two points for the girls team championship, as Hanalani Schools edged Hawaii Prep, 52–54, with all five scorers in the top 20. Seabury’s Freya Carlsen won the race in 19:29.

The boys race flipped the script from the girls race as Hawaii Prep took the team title (52 points) ahead of Hanalani (55), while Seabury Hall’s Finn Hensley, a senior, completed a sweep of the individual crowns for the Maui school in 17:10.
