Galena Sophomore Gioia Coudriet Breaks Course Record Story and Photos by John Dixon for DyeStat Galena sophomore Gioia Coudriet became the first girl to run under 18 minutes on the tough Rancho San Rafael Park course (4,600 feet) and she ran away from the Class 5A girls field to win in 17:54 at Saturday's Nevada state cross country championships. Coudriet beat the runner-up in the race, Aislin McMahon from Somerset Sky Pointe, by 66 seconds. Breaking away from the pack after the first mile, Coudriet took off. The previous course record was held by multiple-time state champion and Foot Locker Finalist Mel Lawrence from Reno HS. Faith Lutheran won the girls team title with 82 points. Avenging a loss at the Southern Regionals, Somerset Academy Sky Pointe's Carter Prater left no doubt as to who was going to win state. Leading at every kilometer mark, he won by 11 seconds over Galena’s David Coisson. Coisson led Galena to the team championship with 51 points. The Class 4A finals were held at Veterans Park in Boulder City (2,500 feet elevation). Clark swept the team titles in decisive fashion. Andrew Duncan started the Nevada season with an invitational win and finished the season with a state championship. Runing side by side with Clark teammate Benjamin Killebrew through 2 miles, Duncan surged at the end of the race and it was enough for a one-second win over Killebrew and winning time of 17:01.1. Freshman Michelle Stana was second at the mile split but moved to the front and led the remainder of the race. She hit 2 miles in 12:56 and had a small one-second lead. She pulled away late and beat Silverado's Elizabeth Neumann by 13 seconds. Tahoe-Truckee swept the Class 3A titles and North Tahoe did the same at 2A/1A. Kiefer Willcox defended his 2024 state championship with a 44-second win over Carson Boyer from Wooster. Willcox led all the way, building up a 30-second gap after 2 miles and crossing the finish line in 15:48. Truckee freshman Autumn Burks led throughout the 3A girls race and won by 39 seconds over Lyla Landy from South Tahoe, breaking the tape in 19:18. Elio Adriani led from the gun and won by 20 seconds over Whittell’s Logan Robertson to lead the North Tahoe boys. His winning time was 16:46. Freshman Lucia Avril won the small-school girls race by 45 seconds over teammate and 2-time state champion Britta Johnson in a time of 19:46.
