Longtime Saratoga Springs Coach Art Kranick DiesPublished by
Together With Wife Linda, Art Kranick Coached Saratoga Springs To 18 New York State Titles, 3 NXN Championships By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor John Nepolitan photo Art Kranick, one of the most successful high school cross country coaches in U.S. history, died Saturday morning as a result of heart failure at the age of 74. Kranick and his wife, Linda, were the architects of a girls cross country dynasty at Saratoga Springs High School in New York, where they won 18 state titles between 1987 and 2023 and 28 New York Federation Championships. "Art could see something in these kids that other coaches would walk on by," Linda Kranick told the Albany Times-Union. "He would see what was in their heart. His biggest joy was to see kids improve, (and) work to improve." Saratoga Springs, after years of dominance in New York, won the first Nike Team Nationals in 2004. After numerous podium finishes, the team known as Kinetic returned to the top in 2019 and 2022. Kinetic qualified for NXN 16 times in the meet's first 18 editions. Art Kranick suffered an infection that put him in a wheelchair near the end of 2023 and he continued to coach until he and his wife stepped down last spring, citing his declining health. The Kranicks' many championships did not come without some controversy as former athletes and parents took issue with coaching methods that they considered extreme. The Kranicks were investigated more than once during their long tenure at the school, but retained their positions. Kranick died hours before Saturday's New York Section 2 Championship, in which Saratoga Springs finished fourth. |
