Frankie Kelly Wins Severn Run's First Invididual Title; Severna Park Girls (3A) Put Four In The Top 10 By Mary Albl of DyeStat The 50th running of the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association (MPSSAA) Cross Country State Championships returned to the hilly Hereford course on Saturday, Nov. 8. History was made in the boys Clas 4A race as Frankie “Tre” Kelly, a senior from Severn Run, surged late to win in 16:09.27, edging Benjamin Burckle of Montgomery Blair by just over a second (16:10.29). The victory marked Severn Run’s first individual state champion in any sport. The school opened a year ago, Urbana captured the team title with 53 points, led by a 10-second scoring spread and four runners in the top 20. Bethesda-Chevy Chase claimed the 4A girls team crown with 65 points, powered by a 1–3 finish from Nya Stoian (19:44.02) and Alexia Ladstaetter (19:55.12). Stoian outleaned Audrey Wychulis of Northwest by less than half a second (19:44.33) in one of the meet’s tightest finishes. The Severna Park girls scored 35 points in a dominant performance for their fourth straight Class 3A team tite with four runners cracking the top 10. Centennial was second with 105 points. Individually, Madeline Quirion of Sherwood ran a personal-best 18:51.07 to win by 13 seconds over Eleanor Finnegan of Wootton (19:04.38). In 3A boys action, Sherwood was led by sophomore twins Dimitrios and Ioannis Rementelas, who went 1-2 in 16:10.60 and 16:18.50. Their low scores weren’t quite enough to overcome Centennial, which claimed the team championship with 77 points, thanks to a deep top-five pack that all finished inside the top 26. Hereford once again owned its home course, winning the 2A girls title with 62 points. It was the program’s fourth in five years. Century’s Taylor Colson captured the individual crown in 19:10.64, with Alyssa Mattes of River Hill next in 19:23.61. The River Hill boys placed five scorers in the top 20 to secure the 2A championship with 75 points. Trevor Miyagishima of Hammond took the individual title in 16:37.52. Liberty repeated as 1A girls champions with 61 points, led by sophomore Ava Snyder who was runner-up in 20:41.70, The individual title went to Maren Blanks of Carver A&T, who clocked 20:31.38 for her first state championship. Simon McGillivray of Brunswick led from the gun and won the 1A boys race in 16:28.02, followed by Dylan Herbst of Smithsburg (16:42.52). Brunswick clinched the 1A team title as well with 49 points.
