DyeStat preseason picks to qualify for NXN: Jesuit OR Coeur d'Alene ID
Current Prediction: Coeur d'Alene ID Jesuit OR
Outlook: With a pair of national podium contenders, the Northwest boys championship race is shaping up to be a Hole In The Wall Invitational rematch between Coeur d'Alene ID and Jesuit OR. CDA won that matchup 43-67 and then followed it up with an incredible performance at the Idaho state meet, where four members of the team ran under 14:50, led by Wyatt Carr. Jesuit scored 31 points last Saturday to win the Class 6A team title in Oregon, with Kellen Williams and Jackson Welsh taking third and fourth. Those two teams are the most likely to finish in the top two on Saturday, but there are a few challengers. Mead put an impressive performance together at the Washington state meet and won the 4A title for the first time in 17 years. Crater and Summit waged a close battle for the 5A crown in Oregon. Lincoln OR, Highland of Pocatello and Bozeman MT are also in the conversation. If a third-place team can keep it close with the top two, there is a chance the Northwest could earn an at-large berth. After a long run at Eagle Island State Park in Idaho, the venue has moved to the Pacific time zone and is now in Spokane. This year, the meet will be held at the Spokane Polo Grounds on a relatively flat course. Next year, the meet will move to the new home course of Gonzaga University. Individually, there are are some new names to watch. The top 12 in last year's race, won by Crater's Tayvon Kitchen, were seniors. The top returner, Kian Compton of Eisenhower WA, was 13th. He was fourth in Saturday's state final in Pasco. The leading contenders for the indivdual win are Cohen Butler of Camas WA, who broke the Class 4A meet record with 14:47.9. Small-school standout Jayden Warner of Warrenton OR was the fastest of the day at the Oregon state meet with 14:55.6. Hyrum Tuft won the Idaho Class 5A title on the fast course at LCSC Orchards in 14:28.2. South Eugene OR's Yosuke Shibata, Sheldon's Malachi Schoenherr and Crater's Garrett Faught are prime contenders from Oregon. Washington's second-fastest runner was freshman sensation Quenton Lanese from Olympia.

DyeStat preseason picks to qualify for NXN: Boise ID Crater OR
Current Prediction: Rocky Mountain ID Sehome WA
Outlook: With three seniors graduating out of Rocky Mountain's top five the defending champions from Idaho were a bit of a question mark going into the season. BYU-bound senior Hallie Heemeyer gave the team strong leadership up front, but it would take the development of younger runners to keep the program thriving. And it happened. With Brooke Thompson back from last year's 18th place finish at NXN, the team got a big lift from former seventh runner Eve Archibald, former sixth runner Makelle Carlson and former JV Solana Lucas in order to arrive at this year's Northwest regional just as strong, if not more so, than last year. Sehome WA's win at Hole In The Wall put the 2A Washington school in the spotlight for a big chunk of the season and the Mariners dominated their race at the state meet. Sehome has a gap between its strong top four -- Kjirsten Ludeman, Lil Desler, Sloane Clines and Samantha Knipp -- and a freshman fifth scorer that could present a challenge on Saturday, but this group is the best from Washington in several years and could defintely land in the top two. Two more teams from Idaho, Timberline and Boise, are also threats earn a top-two spot thanks to their depth. Summit and Lincoln are the top two teams in Oregon and will try to keep Oregon's eight-year streak of representation at NXN alive. Individually, the standouts are Sophia Rodriguez of Mercer Island WA, last year's NXR Northwest runner-up behind Chloe Huyler, Oregon 6A champion Ellery Lincoln, and Heemeyer. North Salem's Nelida Dalgas, who was sixth last year, is back to take another shot at a top-five berth. Billings Central MT freshman Addy Kegel is undefeated so far and another one to watch closely. Maggie Madsen of Cheyenne East WY, the top runner in Wyoming, was seventh last year. Cassidy Armstrong of Ballard WA and Sloan Dickson of Lynden WA are also among the leading contenders for the top five. More news |
