On a day when six men surpassed 70 meters in a discus competition for the first time, Sam Mattis unleashed a career-best mark to break the 43-year-old American record on Thurday at the Oklahoma Throws Series World Invitational in Ramona, Okla.

Mattis finished fourth in the competition, but his second throw measured 72.45m (237-8) and that broke the long-standing U.S. and North American record of 71.32m (234-0) of Ben Plucknett in 1983.

Olympic bronze medalist Matt Denny of Australia threw a world-leading 74.04m (242-11), which is the sixth-farthest thow in history but slightly shorter than his best at Ramona in 2025. The venue, known for its favorable winds, now claims six of the seven best throws in history.

Steven Richter of Germany had a four-meter PR of 74.00m and also threw 73.96m to finish second in the competition. He moved up to No. 4 on he all-time world list.

Another American, Reggie Jagers, won the left-handed discus competition with 69.09m (226-8).
