Three of the best high jumpers in the nation battled it out at the All American Track Classic in Columbia, S.C., on Friday night.

Julian Brown (Myrtle Beach SC) came out on top, clearing 7-2 (2.18 meters) to beat Tommy Pringle (Cuthbertson NC) and Chase Hunter (Jordan NC). Brown is ranked US#1 with a season’s best of 7-4.25 (2.24 meters), and he is undefeated in the event this season.

Pringle and Hunter both cleared 7-0 (2.13 meters), and Pringle won the tiebreaker with fewer misses.

Last year, Brown was eighth in the high jump at New Balance Nationals Outdoor, while Pringle and Jordan took first and sixth, respectively, at Adidas Outdoor Nationals. This year, all three are poised to be national title contenders.

Freshmen Jala Webster-Jackson (Mallard Creek NC) won the girls high jump, clearing 5-6 (1.67 meters). Webster-Jackson is undefeated thus far in the outdoor season, and her season’s best of 5-8 (1.73 meters) leads the nation among freshmen.

Julia Thompson (Travelers Rest SC) threw 130-11 (39.90 meters) to win the girls javelin. She needed a big mark on her last attempt as Elle Cocco (Wando SC) put the pressure on with a throw of 128-5. Thompson delivered, coming within three feet of her personal best.

Ashley Roush (Philip Simmons SC) won the girls pole vault, clearing 13-0 (3.96 meters), the first 13-foot clearance of her career.

There were only two championship finals on the track on Friday — the boys and girls 4x800 meter relays — but both saw some of the fastest times in the country.

North Lincoln NC ran 9:17.21, the 11th fastest time in the country this year, to win the girls race, while Fort Mill SC ran a US#12 time of 7:50.63 to win the boys race.

The meet concludes with a full day of action on Saturday.
