America's youngest track and field Olympic gold medalist, Quincy Wilson of Bullis School MD, made his Arcadia Invitational debut and it was memorable for more than his performances on the track. Wilson's presence alone made the night feel special. His introduction brought one of the biggest cheers of the night and when the starting gun sent off the invitational boys 400, the crowd stood and roared as Wilson blasted through the backstretch. Wilson went out so hard that he seemed to slow a bit before the finish tape but he finished in 45.48, just under Michael Norman's meet record of 45.51 10 years ago. Davis DeGroot of Bonneville UT tried to chase Wilson off the final corner but couldn't close the gap and finished second in 46.07. Wilson returned for an encore performance at the end of the meet, anchoring his team's 4x400 relay to a US#1 time of 3:09.14, second-fastest in Arcadia history. "I'm super happy to be out here (in Calfornia) and enjoying the time," Wilson said. The local sprinters from Servite CA also earned their share of the spotlight. First, Servite rolled through the 4x100 relay in 39.70 seconds, fast enough to re-write their California state record and become the third-fastest team in U.S. history. Relay anchor Benjamin Harris won the 100 meters in a wind-legal 10.32. Then, Kamil Pelovello, Jorden Wells and Jace Wells went 1-2-3 in the invitational 200 meters. Pelovello ran 21.14, edging his teammate by .007 seconds, and Jace Wells ran 21.25. All three are sophomores. Outside in the main stadium, Simon Rosselli of Mead launched a big mark of 225-5 on his first attempt in a gentle cross-wind. Rosselli sought to correct an error in body positioning and caught an even better throw of 225-6 on his final throw in dead still air. Joshua-Kai Smith from Har-Ber VA won the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 13.17w. Josh Hamblin of Weber UT, second in the 110 hurdles, returned later to win the 300-meter hurdles in 36.40. Josiah Bowman of Sage Creek CA, winner of the seeded section of the boys 800 meters in 1:49.54, was faster than the winner of the invitational section. Fort Collins CO senior Cadel Ruthven won the invitational mile in 4:07.98. After Jackson Spencer's meet record 3,200 meters performance, his teammates from Herriman UT took to the track and won the Distance Medley Relay in a time of 10:05.04. Oaks Christian CA was second in 10:06.22. More news |
