Second To Rosary At Arcadia, Calabasas Bounces Back With 44.48 Win; Kaahlilyah Lacy Wins Three Events, Including Running No. 4 All-Time 39.93 In 300 Hurdles By Keenan Gray of DyeStat Sam Givner photos WALNUT, Calif. - One week after finishing second to Rosary CA at the Arcadia Invitational, the Calabasas girls 4x100 relay team returned the favor to their fellow California competitor with a win of their own at the Mt. SAC Relays Saturday at Hilmer Lodge Stadium. Malia Rainey, Devyn Sproles, Marley Scoggins and Olivia Kirk collectively ran a season's best 44.48, which is not only a US#3 this season but also makes them the fifth-fastest school and seventh-fastest team performance in high school history. Kirk ran an excellent final leg for Calabasas and out-ran Rosary's Maliyah Collins to deliver Calabasas the win in the end. Hours later, Rosary did pick up its lone relay win of the day in the invitational in the 4x200, improving their nation-leading mark to 1:34.28. Individually for Rosary, Collins won the invitational 200 (23.55) and Justine Wilson won the invitational 100 (11.65). Kaahliyah Lacy of San Jacinto Valley CA Academy had one of the best overall days by any athlete, earning three individual event wins, including both the invitational hurdle races. The Arcadia 300 hurdles champion ran a personal best 13.65 in the 100 hurdles, won the seeded 100 in a personal best 11.77 and finished up winning the 300 hurdles in 39.93, which ranks No. 4 all-time in high school history. Kiana Chen of Carlmont CA won the 400-meter hurdles in a personal best 1:03.53. Reese Holley of JSerra Catholic CA led three girls under 2:10 in the invitational 800, running a lifetime best and US#8 2:08.10. Shirayah Lewis-Williams from Wilson (Long Beach) earned second in 2:08.83 and Bianca Hurtado of Campo Verde ran 2:09.03 for third, both running lifetime bests, too. Clara Adams of Wilson (Long Beach) continued her streak of wins in the 400, running a season's best 53.13 for the invitational crown. Wilson also won a pair of relays in the 1,600-meter sprint medley (4:08.52) and 4x400 (3:49.55). Buchanan CA ran a US#11 11;54.85 to claim the distance medley title. Centennial NV won its second consecutive invitational shuttle hurdles relay title in back-to-back weekends, running 1:01.13 to go with its win at Arcadia. Lillian Wilson of Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks) used a fourth-round mark of 43 feet, 3.75 inches (13.20m) to win the invitational shot put by three inches. Cassidy Nguyen of Los Alamitos CA made a 13-foot clearance in the invitational pole vault, winning by six inches. Lucas Alberts Breaks 1:50 For First Time In 800 Win Lucas Alberts of Jesuit CA broke through in a big way in the boys invitational 800 meters with a lifetime best 1:49.98, dipping under 1:50 for the first time in his career. The junior ran two seconds faster than his fourth-place finish at Arcadia the weekend before and moved himself up to US#6. Only Josiah Bowman of Sage Creek has a faster time in California this year in 1:49.54. Alden Morales of JSerra Catholic also cracked the US#10 top season list with his US#8 1:50.24 to finish second to Alberts. Maximo Zavaleta of Martin Luther King, California's top finisher in the 3,200 at Arcadia, ran a five-second personal best of 1:50.53, putting him at US#11. Alberts came back to help Jesuit win the invitational distance medley in a US#8 10:09.46. Alberts ran the 400 leg and put Jesuit in a good position to hold off the rest of the field during the 800 and 1,600 legs. The Servite CA boys completed another sweep of the 4x100 and 4x200 relays, starting with their third sub-40-second 4x100 time of the season in 39.98, followed by a 1:23.45 effort in the evening. Nicolas Obimgba of Torrance CA earned a sweep himself in the 100 and 200, winning the invitational races in 10.24 and 20.66, respectively. Jasir Fontenot of Mater Dei Catholic CA, who's been recovering from an ankle injury, put together a season's best time of 13.82 to repeat his 110 hurdles title. Ejam Yohannes of Loyola CA won the invitational 400 in 46.29. Jayden Rendon of Carson, the reigning California 300 hurdles champion, ran a season's best 36.71 in the invitational race to beat Bradon Andrade of Etiwanda by half a second. Logan Patterson Deakyne of San Marcos CA put together a 54.64-second performance to earn the invitational 400 hurdles title. Bakersfield ran a US#6 3:28.03 to beat Wilson by three tenths in a close invitational 1,600 sprint medley. Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks) added another shuttle hurdle relay title alongside their Arcadia title, running 1:00.56. Kayden Hysong of Shadow Mountain AZ was the only competitor in the invitational pole vault to make a bar over 17 feet, clearing a US#3 17-3 (5.25m) for the win. Dean Guzman of Moorpark CA cleared a California season's best 7-0 (2.13m) in high jump, beating Joshua Harel of Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks) by two inches for the invitational title. More news |
