BLOOMINGTON — Michigan City s Makiyah Smallwood did not know what was going on at other places at Saturday s 113th IHSAA boys state championships at Robert C. Haugh Track & Field Complex at Indiana University in Bloomington.

He was getting ready for the 110 hurdles, which he went on to win with a time of 14.11. But when he got to the awards area for his medal, he saw two teammates with a big smile on their faces, Daniel Armstrong won the high jump with a leap of 7-00 and ShanQuan Hemphill was second at 6-11.

I was very happy with the win,” Smallwood said. Winning state, I ve always dreamed about that. I m happy for my school, my city, my family, for everybody. It s a great day in Bloomington.”

Carmel won the team championship with 43 points, while the Wolves and Ben Davis tied for second with 41 points.

With rain early on the day, the high jump was moved indoors. Armstrong and Hemphill were the final two jumpers left and it almost felt like a practice back home in LaPorte County.

Competition took over, we both wanted to win,” Hemphill said. I had to change my mindset when they moved it indoors. I d been jumping outdoors all season.”

When Hemphill went out and Armstrong cleared 7-00, he wanted to go for the state record of 7-01.25. But when he was told it wouldn t count because it was indoors, he just walked outside and went to the awards center.

I was happy we were indoors, the cold and rain can really affect you jumping,” Armstrong said. I was happy to go up against my teammate, for us to finish 1-2 in the state, that s pretty special. But when I found out the record wouldn t count I decided to just end it there.”

Hobart thrower Nick Ray wished the throwing portion of the day was indoors. He fouled out of the shot put, then started his turn in the discus when it was raining. He got one toss in before the downpour, then it got tough.

He finished fourth in the discus at 173-07.

I ve never been in something like that before,” Ray said. After the first throw, my second throw slipped. But I ve got one more year so I ll go after it in both. Under these conditions I ll take a fourth.”

Valparaiso s Travis Sperry-Allison won the 400 with a time of 47.87. He had finished fifth in the 1,600 Relay before, but never a first.

This is my senior year, in my mind there was no way I was going to lose,” said Sperry-Allison, who will run at Bethel College next year. This means a lot. It really does. I m so happy.”
