Ryan Schoppe, a junior at Oklahoma State and the reigning NCAA Division 1 Indoor Elite 90 Award winner with a cumulative 3.925 GPA as well as a member of the fastest indoor distance medley relay lineup in collegiate and world history at 9:16.40, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss competing for both DMR and 3,000-meter titles March 10-11 at the Division 1 indoor championship meet at the Albuquerque Convention Center in New Mexico. Schoppe reflects on teaming Feb. 17 at the Arkansas Qualifier at Randal Tyson Track Center with Fouad Messaoudi, DJ McArthur and Hafez Mahadi to hold off Washington (9:16.65), eclipsing the 2021 record of 9:19.42 achieved by Oregon. Schoppe shares how although Oklahoma State coach Dave Smith was not in attendance in Arkansas, since he was coaching the United States men's team at the World Athletics Cross Country Championships in Bathurst, Australia the same weekend, that he had still sent a message of congratulations to the quartet immediately following the race. Schoppe explains the added motivation for the returning athletes who finished fifth in the DMR at last year's Division 1 indoor final at the Birmingham CrossPlex in Alabama, along with examining the learning experiences from his anchor leg in last season's championship race. He reflects on Oklahoma State placing second against Northern Arizona on a head-to-head tiebreaker Nov. 19 at the Division 1 cross country final and how inspired the Cowboys are to capture NCAA titles individually and in the DMR in Albuquerque. He also analyzes the performance of teammate Taylor Roe last year in Birmingham and how her victory in the women's 3,000 final gave the entire Oklahoma State distance program the belief they could also contend for national championships. Schoppe also speaks about the goals for Alex Maier, Messaoudi and himself in the Division 1 final to sweep the top three spots in the 3,000.
