Klaudia Kazimierska, a University of Oregon indoor and outdoor All-American and the reigning Polish women's 1,500-meter national champion as well as a member of Team Poland for the Paris Olympics, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss elevating to No. 6 all-time in her country along with the No. 4 all-dates competitor in collegiate history following her 4:01.89 performance June 20 at the Irena Szewinska Memorial meet in Bydgoszcz. Kazimierska, 22, reflects on earning the Olympic qualifying standard in her home country at the first track she raced on at age 13, followed by winning the national title June 27 in 4:10.96. She explains how significant it was to compete in front of family and friends, along with speaking about the extensive media requests following her races and the comparison between interacting with Polish media outlets and American-based journalists. Kazimierska revisits running 4:07.47 in Poland in 2020 and how she was frustrated over not being able to improve on that performance during the regular season, before clocking 4:06.92 in the NCAA Division 1 semifinals June 6, followed by taking third in the final two days later, then lowering the mark June 15 to 4:06.24 at the Harry Jerome Classic in Canada, before achieving her lifetime-best effort in her first race in Poland since capturing Under-23 national titles last July in the 800 and 1,500. She shares how Oregon coach Shalane Flanagan sent her a text message following a fourth-place finish in the 1,500 in 4:10.71 at the European U23 Championships in Finland last July outlining how the goal for Kazimierska this year was going to be to compete at the Olympics, and the inspiration and motivation that provided entering this season. Kazimierska also examines how beneficial it was to compete in April at the Bryan Clay Invitational and the 114th Drake Relays, as well as having multiple opportunities to race against fellow international athletes like Harvard's Maia Ramsden and Providence's Kimberley May from New Zealand, Oklahoma State's Billah Jepkirui of Kenya, among several others during the NCAA indoor and outdoor championship meets. She speaks about her final Olympic tuneup in the 800 on July 20 at the Sound Running Sunset Tour presented by Brooks at Occidental College in Los Angeles and her aspirations to run sub-2:03 for the first time. Kazimierska also expresses gratitude to Flanagan and the Oregon coaching staff, along with teammates, training partners and friends for their support throughout her Olympic pursuit. She also explains her excitement for Poland having three female athletes racing Aug. 6 in the opening round in the 1,500 in Paris, along with Weronika Lizakowska and Aleksandra Plocinska, as well as discussing the potential for her friend Natalia Kaczmarek to challenge for the Olympic gold medal in the 400, after securing World Athletics Championships silver in Budapest last year.
