Oregon sophomore Lexi Ellis, an NCAA Indoor and Outdoor triple jump finalist, discusses with DyeStat editor Erik Boal growing up in a mixed-race family and how her father recently shared with her memories of being subject to police brutality when he was younger. Ellis shares her experiences of recently taking part in a peaceful protest in Eugene, but also expresses her reactions to more aggressive and violent gatherings around the country. She also talks about members of her extended family being involved in law enforcement and how necessary it is for the system to be reformed in an effort to prevent future brutality cases. Ellis reflects on the protests of Colin Kaepernick and Gwen Berry and her feelings not only when they happened, but again in the present, as she hopes their messages, and those from other athletes, are better received and understood when it comes to educating and enlightening the community on issues of racism, human rights and inequality. She speaks about her own platforms as an African-American athlete and how Oregon has helped support and encourage tolerance and inclusivity not only in its athletic department, but also within the community.
