Texas junior Charles Brockman III discusses with DyeStat editor Erik Boal the monologue he recorded and published in the aftermath of the death of George Floyd, in addition to Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and other African-Americans as a result of police brutality and violence. Brockman reflects on when he was a student-athlete at Plano High in Texas and being racially profiled and harrassed by law enforcement at a local restaurant. He also revisits his emotions in 2012-15 following the deaths of Trayvon Martin, Eric Garner, Michael Brown and Sandra Bland. Brockman talks about the need for continued peaceful protest throughout the country and the need for legislative reform when it comes to law enforcement and their conduct. Brockman shares the need for athletes at all levels to use their platform to educate and unify audiences in an effort to change systemic racism in our country. He also reveals how significant the role of Texas coach Edrick Floreal has been not only for the Longhorns track and field team, but the Austin community in creating a positive support system and family atmosphere. Brockman also expresses disappointment over the Coronavirus pandemic cancelling the spring season, especially the NCAA Division 1 Outdoor Championships at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin.
