ASICS professional Queen Claye, the 2010 Bowerman Award winner, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss the 10-year anniversary of being the only athlete in NCAA Division 1 history to capture outdoor titles in both the 100-meter hurdles and 400-meter hurdles in the same year, in addition to capturing the indoor 60-meter hurdles championship during her senior season at Virginia Tech. Claye revisits her 2008 season, during which a hamstring injury resulted in her not being able to compete at the Division 1 outdoor meet, only for her to rebound less than a month later to finish second at the U.S. Olympic Trials in the 400 hurdles and qualify as a 19-year old for the Summer Games in Beijing. She also reflects on her experience at the Olympics, where she reached the semifinals despite not having her coach present in China, and how that provided even more inspiration and motivation to achieve her goals, both in college and as a professional. Claye examines 2009 as a turning point in her career, where she decided not to compete past the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships in order to evaluate her future in the sport, which also allowed her to create the necessary structure and ambition to complete all the unfinished business and achieve every remaining goal during her career at Virginia Tech the following year. She also speaks about her consistency throughout the 2010 indoor and outdoor schedules, and how her focus and mindset resulted in Claye not losing any hurdle races at any distance during the regular season or postseason. Claye shares how challenging her journey was to become one of the most well-rounded hurdlers in NCAA history after being recruited out of high school as a horizontal jumper. She also analyzes the incredible depth of both the women's 100 hurdles and 400 hurdles in the U.S. entering the 2021 Olympic Trials and how difficult it will be to make the national team in either event to compete in Tokyo.
