American indoor and outdoor women's triple jump record holder Tori Franklin joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss her experiences attending protests in support of "Black Lives Matter" both during her collegiate career at Michigan State and now as a professional athlete. Franklin reflects on attending a Juneteenth celebration in California and what the holiday means to her and the country this year. She also examines her emotions following the 2015 death of Sandra Bland, which followed the murders in the previous years of Trayvon Martin, Eric Garner and Michael Brown, and how they compare to this year following the killing of George Floyd, in the aftermath of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor and other African-Americans. Franklin shares how she is acknowledging people who are making charitable donations in support of "Black Lives Matter" and other organizations by hand-crafting rings for those individuals as a sign of gratitude. Franklin also talks about writing a novel and making jewelry during the quarantine as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic. She addresses the challenges of African-American athletes to gain sponsorships and marketing opportunities, in addition to emphasizing the importance of the track and field community to use its platform to vote in an effort to advocate change and reform when it comes to racial inequality and injustice. Franklin revisits her back-and-forth battle with Keturah Orji in the triple jump in February at the USATF Indoor Championships in Albuquerque, N.M., and how much room there is for improvement even after setting the American indoor record 48-0.50 (14.64m). She looks ahead not only to the opportunity to compete at the 2021 U.S. Olympic Trials at the renovated Hayward Field, but to a four-year stretch that includes two Olympics and a pair of World Outdoor Championships.
