Nia Britt, entering her sixth year at Iowa and an NCAA Division 1 outdoor finalist in the women's shot put last year, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss the recent children's book she and her father, Melvin, and 13-year-old brother Coco published on Amazon entitled "Bakerstown Chronicles." Britt shares how she hopes this will be the first of a five-book series following many of the same characters. She reveals how aspects of recognizing equality and overcoming bullying are prevalent themes in the story. Britt expresses what it was like to collaborate with family members on this project, which several years to complete from conception to publishing, and how the Coronavirus pandemic gave them more time to work together in California before she recently returned to Iowa City. She hopes to have the second book in the series completed by the end of the year to publish in early in 2021. Britt reflects on how she and teammate Laulauga Tausaga, the reigning Division 1 women's discus throw champion, were involved in an accident in the fall when they were both hit by a truck while riding on Britt's moped in Iowa City, and the recovery and rehabilitation that has followed. She also speaks about the forming of a committee that includes African-American student-athletes in the Iowa track and field program entitled S.Y.T., short for "Speak Your Truth," and how they are trying to do their part to educate the community about "Black Lives Matter" and provide a platform for the voices of the student-athletes to be heard. Britt revisits participating in protests with family members during her time home in California and how voting in upcoming elections will be crucial in order to create significant change and reform. Britt examines the importance of her legacy at Iowa, both on and off the track, and talks about her motivation for 2021 and the desire for her and Tausaga to take the top two spots at the Big Ten Conference final in the shot put and for both individuals to be All-Americans, in addition to Tausaga defending her discus title at the Division 1 outdoor final.
