Bullis School MD graduate and 10-time New Balance Nationals relay champion Leah Phillips, an LSU signee, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss missing out on an opportunity to set the all-time record for most national relay titles by a prep athlete with the cancellation of both indoor and outdoor championship meets by the NSAF, as well as using the opportunity during the Coronavirus pandemic to improve her flexibility and hurdling technique in preparation to compete at the collegiate level next year. Phillips reflects on the emotions she and her teammates felt upon learning that Bullis coach Joe Lee was hospitalized with COVID-19, and how his experience was a reminder to the entire program about the magnitude of the pandemic. She also revisits taking a trip in early February, along with Bullis teammate Ashton Allen as part of an NSAF all-star team, to compete at the Reykjavik International Games in Iceland and expresses how significant the opportunity was, considering travel restrictions and guidelines currently in place for U.S. citizens during the pandemic. Phillips speaks about her opportunity to race Feb. 8 at the NYRR Millrose Games against a field of professional athletes in the 60-meter hurdles, including the past two World Indoor gold medalists in Keni Harrison and Nia Ali, and running a personal-best 8.44 seconds. She also shares the details of her recruiting process and how much it means to be following a family legacy created by her mother Christa by competing for the LSU program. Phillips examines the depth of the Tigers' roster and how she hopes to benefit from training with such a strong hurdling corps, including fifth-year senior Tonea Marshall, as LSU pursues winning a national championship next year. She expresses her gratitude for being able to work with such a supportive coaching staff at Bullis and being able to win eight of her 10 national relay titles with fellow graduate and Oregon signee Shaniya Hall. Phillips talks about her enjoyment of jazz music and practicing yoga, and how they both connect with her track performance, along with conveying a powerful message regarding racial and social equality and the need for a more tolerant, inclusive society.
