New Mexico All-American and Israeli national record holder Adva Cohen, who won the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase title and placed second in the 1,500 meters at the recent national championships in Tel Aviv, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal from her home in Israel to discuss her appreciation for competition in her country during the summer and her planned return to Albuquerque in August. Cohen reflects on the NCAA Division 1 Indoor Championships in Albuquerque being canceled as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic, and how she and her international teammates left the United States to return home during the spring, which required a 14-day quarantine at a hotel in Israel before being able to reconnect with her family and friends. She also shares the stay-at-home orders enforced in Israel and how people were initially not allowed to exceed a 100-meter area from their residence. Cohen revisits how she has remained connected with her teammates, both in Albuquerque and other countries during the pandemic, and how important their friendship and support has been to the team's overall mental health. She also reveals how beneficial it has been to take online summer school classes during her time in Israel, in an effort to lighten her academic schedule in 2021, as she begins preparation to train to compete in the steeplechase at the Tokyo Olympics. Cohen remains hopeful of a potential cross country season during the fall, versus the potential of it being shifted to 2021 or being canceled all together, similar to the outdoor track and field season due to the pandemic. She also examines the issue that arose in early July about the U.S. federal government exploring the issue of international students taking only online classes possibly being deported and expresses her gratitude for the support she and her international teammates have received from New Mexico. Cohen talks about the challenges of leaving her family in Israel again, but also her excitement to reunite with teammates to begin training again and starting the fall academic calendar in Albuquerque.
