Mountain West Conference Female Athlete of the Year, two-time NCAA Division 1 individual champion and 13-time All-American Weini Kelati, entering her senior year at New Mexico, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss the conference's decision to postpone fall sports and having to wait until 2021 to hopefully compete in another championship event. Kelati, who is pursuing a degree in a public health, shares how much she has been inspired by frontline workers during the Coronavirus pandemic and how she hopes to be able assist people in a similar manner following her graduation. She expresses how special her journey has been at New Mexico and how meaningful it will be to become the first member of her family to graduate college in the spring. Kelati examines the challenges of not having many of her friends and teammates, especially fellow international student-athletes, in Albuquerque during the pandemic, and how important it has been for the coaches and members of the New Mexico program to stay connected virtually. She reveals how significant the leadership of New Mexico head coach Joe Franklin and the Lobos' staff has been during the past five months, especially after the Division 1 Indoor Championships were canceled on the eve of the event in Albuquerque, and how that affected Kelati and her teammates. Kelati reflects on her opportunities to continue to train on various trails throughout the city, and how grateful she has been to maintain fitness despite not being able to train with the team or compete in races. She also revisits winning the Division 1 title in the 10,000 meters last June, as well as the cross country crown in November, and how those moments have allowed her to remain motivated and focused on her next championship opportunity on the track. She analyzes how strong New Mexico's distance group will be next year, especially following the arrival of transfers Fiona O'Keeffe from Stanford, Anna Kostarellis from Xavier and Hannah Miller from SMU, in addition to several talented veterans returning. Kelati also looks to the future and what it would mean to her to have an opportunity to represent the Americans at the 2022 World Outdoor Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., the same place where she raced for the first time in the U.S. competing for her native Eritrea in the 3,000 meters at the 2014 World U-20 Championships, before attending Heritage High in Virginia.
